When talking about ADSL I've seen a few acronyms thrown around that I'm unsure about. Perhaps someone could define them for me.

LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) I know about. But I've also see the following mentioned that I don't know:
  • ULL
  • UUL
Do these have meanings or are they just typos for LLU?

ULL - Unbundled Local Loop, i.e. the same thing
UUL - Haven't seen this one, probably a typo

Those aren't Acronyms they're Initialisms.

I've seen UUL at the following places:

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/186

I'm beginning to think it's just a typo.

LLU - local loop unbundling

UCLL is the other term - means the same thing but only applies to copper. No idea why they decided to add in a letter. Presumably TLAs are now FLAs.

Ah, yes, UCLL was the other term I'd seen but couldn't remember.  Thanks Paul!

Some are a bit from column A and column B.

So with ASAP you can say it as A S A P as separate letters which would be the initiaism, or as a word ASAP which is the acronym.

LLU is an initialism because you can't say it as a word.

You can't? I just did, you'll have to take my word for it, it! Roffle! Oh wait, did I mean ROFL?

So ASAP is both an initialism and an acronym? Are all initialisms acronyms or are all acronyms initialisms? Additionally, do all acronyms start out as initialisms until someone coins a pronunciation?

Other examples, JPEG, MS-DOS. What are they?

I think the term you're looking for is pedant.

Is that pronounced "pe-dant", "ped-ant", or "P-E-D-A-N-T"?

All acronyms are initialisms, some initialisms are acronyms. Some acronyms become so popular they become words.
Initialisms: LLU PHD ADSL
Acronyms: JPEG GIF
Acronyms become words: Laser radar
