I've sorted it now. I dug out my old modem and have back to backed it with the Nova modem. Reconfigured the WAN interface to be ethernet with the Nova as the DNS

All my wired and Wifi connections have moved back to the old modem. I'll give it few days and then get Nova to switch off their Wifi

In the meantme I'll give the login suggestion another go

I am also trying to find out the username and password for the router. I tried admin and last 6 digits of MAC address to no avail. I want to find out the PPPoE details so I am able to configure my own router to use instead as it has much better range, automatic 2.5 and 5ghz swapping, and better harddrive/SAMBA support. It's unfortunate that this is so hard, as I am fairly happy with the rest of the service.

Use pppoe, any username/password will work, the network uses port based authentication.

I tried putting a random username and password for pppoe on my own router, but it didn't seem to work. Would there be any settings I would need to change to get port based authentication working? or is that all on Nova's side?

Cheers

Settings are all entirely conventional. UFB and VDSL are PPPoE vlan 10. ADSL is standard 0/100 ppp. Authentication is port based for all users as standard. CGNAT/dual stack v6 (/56) is standard, Static-ip v4/v6 on request.

I understand that I have to use the Nova modem to get the phones to work. Other than that I now have everything behind the old modem

Hi all - I recently joined Nova (a week ago) and so far am generally pleased with them. But....

I have several wireless devices (laptops, phones, as well as a wireless speaker system) and I also have a google home hub that I have just bought (also sometimes called a google nest hub).

I recently started this thread: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=73&topicid=255887 because I was having a lot of trouble getting the hub to, first, detect my wifi networks and, second, connect to them. I somehow managed it, but the next morning woke up and the hub had disconnected and was unable to detect the network again.

I am at the point of assuming it may be due to Nova's model settings and am unable to login  to the router to either update the SSID, change the channels, or anything else. Nova also appear to operate limited customer service hours.

Could this issue be linked to having too many devices in the house for the Netcomm (roughly 10 wireless + 3 wired), or to do with having a dynamic IP (it looks like Nova uses CGNAT), or something else? I am definitely questioning my choice to go with Nova based on the inability to do anything at all in the router. I am currently on hold with their tech support.

I signed up with Nova about 6 weeks ago (wouldn't had I seen this earlier).  Overall the service is good, compared to Vodafone the customer service was excellent.  The wifi from the supplied (piece of crap, but adequate) router is secured, but only works in one room, so we have a second router for the rest of the house.  The bandwidth though, isn't great.  It varies from 70Mbps at the best right down to 6Mbps at peak time when folks want to use Netflix and the like.  I'm home during the day which is when the speed is OK, and that's when I use it for work, but the family want fast for Nutflicks and games, and that's pretty hit and miss.  I asked them about it, they sent me to their speedtest app and asked for screenshots, which I'm compiling now to send a decent picture of what's happening.

I will be upgrading to the faster connection if they let me - it's currently signed up at 100, not that I've ever got beyond about 70.

I guess maybe the network they built is now a bit too small for peak demand and needs some extra beef.  If I wasn't locked in by getting a massive credit deal, I'd have cancelled by now.

I think you'll need to fix the constraints in your own network first.

Spyware? You mean the modem/router?  I'm sure you don't mean the well secured Ubuntu installation I use, with Firefox in a snap because I don't trust the debs.  I also stopped all the containers on my machine. (edit: oh, wait, your username is spyware... got me fooled there)

I should have said - the speedtests are plugged direct to the router via cable, and I don't have other devices connected at the time.  To be frank, I'd expect to be able to plug direct to the gig port on the modem and consistently get 50-70% of the advertised speed.  The limits of wifi etc are expected, particularly with this crappy router, but the service I paid for isn't being delivered.  It was miles faster on the Vodafone cable network.

I can assure the Nova network is barely idling at the moment, its got a significant amount of headroom and there are no bottlenecks anticipated in the foreseeable future.

I'm on the 200Mb/s plan and have  just done a speedtest using the supplied router on the 5Ghz network. Both my laptop and smartphone are reaching the full 200Mb/s download and I am able to get 20Mb/s upload on my laptop and 3Mb/s on my phone. Granted, this is midday so not peak time.

Hi

I have recently join Nova Broadband and I am wanting to buy a router to use instead of the included one (it's range isn't very good). Is there any specific type of router you would suggest and any custom setup needed?

Thanks

As long as you don't use Nova voice any standard router will do the trick. Settings are vlan 10 PPPoE for UFB/VDSL. Any username/password will log in the PPPoE as Nova used port based authentication. Your list of router options are large and varied so I won't recommend a specific device just that there is no non-standard requirements.

@tonyparker In my signature I have a range of routers.

Generally, if signal is an issue then spend a little extra and grab the Ubiquiti AmpliFi and be done with it.
