Gordy7:

Acars certainly did send out live position info... May not do these days.

There are some nice illustrations in the link below of Acars messages showing position info:

All that was needed when I was playing about was to plot the coordinates on a map using a PC.

They still do, but its past-tense data. For instance JST inbound to CHC at night, will send datapackets of 5-6 position reports every 5mins or so on approach. Positions they WERE at passing waypoints etc previously. More or less a safety net so its logged somewhere incase of TCAS failure.

Now its destination weather requests, if new food is needed. Water for the loo restocked. How much fuel was taken onboard, Push-back from terminal time

Actual fun messages few and far between

Lying around somewhere I have a Uniden UBC3000XLT, which was/is quite a decent handheld scanner.

Back in the day I used to use it quite a bit for other things, but it would pick up aircraft (and the Police) just fine. I used to mainly use it at airshows etc. In the pre smartphone days I also had the Wellington tower pre-tuned, as there was a frequency where they they did a continuous rolling tape-recording of the latest weather forecast. It was always far more up to date than the newspaper or radio.

I had it in at work when there was an armed offenders call out nearby, and that was quite interesting. I certainly knew much more about what was going on than they told us - which was basically just "stay in the building".

Occasionally if I mis-typed a command it would also charge off on a scan through the cellular bands, and would also lock onto calls on the old 025 network without much bother.

Hasn't been used for a few years. I must dig it out and test it at some point......

A keeper! Can also still do POCSAG decoding with them till they go and shut that down.
