I don't think so, no. Only because Samsung NZ doesn't have any dates, I assume that it applies for both, Telecom and Vodafone.

fallen: I am wondering if it might be worth while for the more advanced users of the phone to put together a tips and tricks thread.

I have found one, how to do a screen capture:
Press the return key and at the same time press the Home key (middle button). The screen capture is saved in the Screen Capture folder on the internal memory. Not sure if the method will work on 2.1, works on Froyo.

I wouldn't mind having a separate thread on tips and tricks. I'm just not sure the rest of the community (owners of other Android devices) would appreciate another thread on Galaxy S.

So, how is your phone now Neets? Do you think it just might be worth going back to what you were on before and forget about JPU until everything has been ironed out? heh

Nah, I'm a sucker for punishment. The things that aren't quite right aren't show stoppers for me. They irk me because I like perfection and these things worked previously, but they're not hampering my use of the phone (except the battery!) and I still love the phone so I'll keep digging to see if I can't get these last few things sorted and by that time I'm sure there'll be another version and I'll just jump to it and see if everything comes out in the wash so to speak :)

Just to add to the general knowledge base, I have read a few times on XDA that if you want to upgrade to Doc's JPU, doing a full factory wipe, then a stock JPU flash from samfirmware.com and THEN flashing Doc's version is advisable.

Is it worth factory resetting my phone before the update through Kies? I know it will wipe all the data, but I don't mind redoing it. I want a clean install. :>

Quick, look for your cable and start charging! And reboot your computer/laptop before doing the Kies update. You don't want to get stuck because you computer decided to do something dodgy and reboot on you ;-)

Hmmm... I got mine from Harvey Norman. So it's an unbranded one. However, when I look at CSC of my phone it states the following: I9000VNZJH2. I'm assuming that V stands for Vodafone. :>

I will do if I don't come across some details. I'm still catching up on the thread but in reading a few posts this morning, one other person has also found that ROM Manager wont take a backup. Gave me a small level of comfort that' it's not just me with a dark cloud hanging over my head ;-)

I have recently updated my phone to 2.2.1 (19000XXJPU) and have also done a factory reset. It feels to me like the phone finally works like it was supposed to out of the box. Going from 2.1 to 2.2 was good, and this is even better. Phone is very quick now. It used to lag a lot while syncing, but seems to be fine now. I'm yet to have a go at trying out the GPS, but it was working fairly well for me in 2.2 anyway. I'm not running any lag fixes by the way.

Ps does anyone know of a good navigation app that uses offline maps? I only have 100mb of data so I have to be pretty frugal with it.

Navigon. You'll need Market Enabler to spoof the US market so that you can download it, then download NZ/AU maps from your home/work adsl connection and then transfer them to your SD card. There is a thread somewhere here with all the details.

Well, I'm just trying to get my head around Heimdall. I have messaged Ben, who created this software. I've had few questions before I begin using it. Once I have my questions answered, I will give the bootloader method flashing a go, which at this stage has no bricked phones reported. It uses Windows drivers instead of ones from Samsung and apparently tones safer than Odin, not only for bootloader fixing, but for any firmware flashing (so they claim). So this can potentially give you guys something to work with.

It's strange. I usually don't come up against any problems. All I feel like I've done on the forum is weep about the little problems I've got. Sorry for all the complaining.

There's only really a couple of things:
Inability to take a ROM Backup (haven't tried since the first failure)
Can't change my CSC - contacted Bloodrider
Can't sent MMS without being connected to data

Just to re-iterate, using data to send MMS is not a problem, that's working as designed. Impossible to send MMS/pxt without using data, you probably just didn't notice before. That's why you have to have an MMS APN (data connection) configured, whereas you don't need APNs for SMS/text.

What you should see if connected via wifi is that the 3G/H connection will burst into life for the MMS connection at the same time as staying connected to wifi for (ordinary internet) data. It can use 2G or 3G/H is doesn't matter, but you can't send MMS over the wifi connection (obviously it needs to go back to the operator).

Interestingly the network actually 'tells' the handset there is an MMS is download by using a special form of SMS, but then the handset uses data to connect and download it.

If you don't mind, then go ahead.

When going from 2.1 to 2.2 you can't restore you system data using Titanium Backup. But you can still restore you user apps and data.

When I factory reset I find that when I select the launcher (LauncherPro in my case) then my homescreen and pages come back. I need to reset the widgets and the wallpaper. But that's all.

Of course you'll have to set up the APN's (if you don't use APN Backup and Restore), wireless and your Google account but not really a drama :)

Looking forward to hearing how you get on.

That was a new function introduced in Froyo. It doesn't exist on 2.1. And yes, it's very handy :-)

Great, thanks for the confirmation. I guess I never looked ;-) And I actualy don't use MMS. Just send photos to Facebook or via Twitter. It was something I tested after flashing a new ROM to make sure the functionality still existed/worked. Cheers
