Batman: Sounds like a Winston Peters Labour Green government we will have.

Why is that? The fact that Labour/Greens will pick up one seat, possible two was already expected. It just means Peters can opt for either, but have less media hassle if he chose Labour with a lesser seat count

Lolly scramble starts again. I wonder how much the lolly scramble in the election and now is uncosted

Your Winston hate is clouding your posts. If nothing changed, he can easily opt for Labour, that just is a slightly harder sell, although he can say the coalition is a clear majority.

That the Nets vs Lab/Gre is almost even, its a fair race now

As far as my memory takes me, there has never been a governing party that has had 51% of the seats. Maybe I am recalling incorrectly.

I don't hate Winston. I'm just a neutral observer. He has shown the country who he is over the years. At least Peter Dunne in his interview echoes my sentiments.

I am just calling how I see things are going.

If we get a L/N/G govt, then that's great, let's see what they can do to house prices for the locals, let's see if Dunedin can get a new hospital that it needs, etc. Or will it be the rich that get richer as usual, and no money for a proper hospital for Dunedin, as usual.

If we get a N/N govt, then it's no change from the last 10 years or so. Same old. THe rich get richer. As usual.

If its Labour it will be interesting. A bit more social spending, and more green spending. Forget house prices, Labours policies wont really help much, but a little. Where they are now is where they are.

If its National it wont be the same old, but close. Peters will get some of his policies in, and remember, just because they come up with an agreed deal, through the term he won't be forced to vote for everything Nats want.

I read the other day that Peters wants FTA sport. This was across many sports not just rugby tests. Tennis was mentioned, we have bugger all in that sport, maybe its the three Grand Slams that are on Sky? And racing which is only on Sky Basic. Interesting as this was supposedly a non negotiable.

Jacinda will have a battle keeping her MP's in line, let alone the natural dislike between Greens and Winston. Greens are already whining like children over who will get Ministerial s. It will be a shambles, and Winston probably knows it. Remember Greens and Winston almost have same number of MP's.

I feel the Greens have softened to the possible end situation. If they all take the attitude that "hey, we often disagree, but we can agree on some stuff, if we work together, we can take power and get on with it" Seems Peters just wants Minister of Foreign Affairs and of Racing, so if the deputy was not required, and both have semi offered it publically, thats a possible sign of that he's not in it to take everything he can. It could be as you say, a mess, but it could also work well. I see Nats and Peters a definite mess, many recipes there for oneupmanship and negative banter.

Coalitions before the election is an interesting change, that way voters would get to cast votes on their preferred combination upfront, not roll the dice and take their chances with whichever party is prepared to sell its soul for the baubles of power. But then, what would be the difference between that and a first past the post system other than you vote for 2 (or more) parties, not one?
