The only reason to use an inkjet is photos, they are crap for text on plain paper. And if you use dodgey inks then it can have crazy colours which is never good.

We got one with wifi and the printer can then sit anywhere in the house.

Many more recent printers also natively support printing from iPads and other tablets/phones, which I think would be an advantage in buying something newer.

I've never successfully sorted out printing from our iPad, and it's frustrating to having to always use the computer for this purpose.

I find the Brother multi0function inkjets are very economical with the compatible, re-fillable cartridges fitted (get on trademe or Aliexpress). Get a wi-fi model, or network model if it is easy to connect to router or home network - much less hassle than connecting USB cable every time.

Have a Brother colour laser that was cheap (<$100) and does great quality duplex printing. Is good but expensive to replace the toner, even when buying compatible 3rd party ink.

All the stuff I've been reading today on the HP's X-series printers/multifunctions (after suggestions from Networkn on another thread) is that the text quality is pretty good, and most reviews say totally adequate for business purposes, let alone home use - not totally up there with laser (not as black or clearly defined) but way better than the inkjets of yesteryear. (I'm certainly going to investigate the X-series further, as it's for a business, though the price is probably above what the OP wants to pay).

large hevy text, yeah inkjet can be ok, but smaller lighter stuff, like you would want to save ink and fit more per page, like printing 2 or 4 "a4" pages per page and the inkjets totally start to become an unreadable mess.

We have a Canon one that works well. Nothing fancy, prints from iPad ok most of the time.

Have had the occasional weird print where something in the image makes it print different colours, but that's probably going to output the same to any printer as I think it's an issue at the iPad level.

I have had the weird colour things because the printers dont support any colour space conversion depending on what colourspace the image is in. Takes printing from a PC to get that to happen. They seem to be set up to print whatever a direct from the camera on a phone is in, so if you print random internet pictures you can get weird stuff happening.
