Hi everyone,

I've just recently moved into a new flat in Mt Eden about 200m from the exchange(Telecom technician told me this when he came to fix one of the phone jacks) and am experiencing consistent lag spikes on all games and streaming video.

I am on Telecom's 40GB plan and I am still way under my limit for this month. My speedtest.net results seem to be excellent according to the site (17mbs D/L and 0.9-1 Upload).

I have a macbook pro and hp laptop running vista. My model is the standard Thompson TG585 ADSL 2 modem that comes with the plan.

Whenever im playing a game every 2 seconds i get a spike that for a short moment freezes the game then goes back to normal e.g I could be running through a doorway then all of a sudden im in the next room.

My latency is good, sitting from 200-350 on international servers most nights. I tried with my Firewall on and off, anti-virus installed and unintstalled.

I thought this might be an OS issue, but the same thing happens on both windows and mac.

I have called Telecom and they can't find any fault at their end so I'm really dumbstruck what to do. My download speed is fine they say but why am I getting these spikes!

Any help for a noob would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Are you connecting to the modem using wireless or a wired connection, if wireless try a wired connection and see what happens.

I am connecting via LAN. The spiking is slightly more noticeable in the evenings, I presume because of traffic, but even at mid day its spiking.

I guess you don't have a spare router to try... see how it compares. Is it connecting via ADSL2+ or G.DMT?

Time to find a new industry!

Hi Webwat,

My DSL connection is

DSL Type:
G.992.5 annex A ?

Not sure if that helps? I'll try track down another router to test it out on. Thanks!

The exchange is where De Post is, try another modem, does it happen on all game servers? and do you have any browsing issues? also make sure you test it with no other devices on your LAN to make sure that nothing is doing random bursts of BS.

Thanks for all the help guys, won't have access to a another modem till Friday so i'll keep you posted. The spikes are occurring on all games, streaming video, PS3 games and TVNZ on demand. I'm like 200m from Depost so absolutely confused. Would turning interleaving back ON be an option?

Would be interersting to see what error stats from the modem are, could be that its dropping packets, interleaving may/should help there, all depends on the depth of the errors, but would be good to see the error results, should be in the same area as the main stats.

Find out the address of some of the servers you're playing on and run some tracerts

eg:

Start Menu > Run > cmd > tracert battle.net

PS:  If you use the compose reply button rather than quick reply, the tool bar has buttons for adding links (the one that looks like a chain link)

Hi, I suspect the issue more upstream (within Orcon or upstream) to be getting the IP unreachable results.

Looking at your connection, the number of CRC errors in 7hrs is not particularly unusual, well that I have ever seen, and the HEC errors is not some enormous number its a check sum, just one error could in theory cause a number like that. Bascially there is not a large number of CRC errors that would impact in any continual way.

That said your sync rate is very low for your attenuation. Could there be some interference, how close are you to the AM Tx's at Titahi Bay?. But once again I dont see this impacting on your DSL throughput to the degree you indicate, ie continual dropouts.

Sorry for being a noob but what is the AM Tx? Isn't Titahi Bay outside of Wellington? How would i measure this?

You mentioned Wellington/Porirua, so just checking if you were near the Titahi Bay transmitter site, this can cause issues for DSL services if you are within 2-3km of it.

I think i am getting the same i know its not something running in the background. As i downloaded internet monitor the the connection so i can see whats running.

I seem to spike only in the afternoon ( haven't played to much in morning as i can't only in weekends )

I have those routers supplied by Telecom, suspecting it might be that not sure yet here are my stats

Going to change it over on the Monday for my Dlink modem. its not much of a spike.. well in FPS it is like from 220 in usa sever's to 430 quite a difference. it's not the sever as others don't lag
