Who registered one since they went live yesterday?

Apparently they'll need 50,000 registrations to break even on teh investment to set up the TLD.

Will the domain take off I wonder, or are people banking on being able to use simply .nz later this year as their preferred suffix?

Wow if that figure is accurate, it doesn't sound like that great a gamble to me. I can't imagine businesses taking up a .kiwi address (too informal for my liking) and they aren't that many households lining up to buy their own domain names.

I heard this a while ago, but you can calculate it easily by diving the upfront registration fees by the wholesale cost. I think it was like $180k - $200k or something like that to become a registrar for a new TLD. Possibly more.

Time will tell though. The gTLD market is being thrown on it's head, so it will be interesting to see how new extensions are marketed. Once people get out of a .com mindset (or .nz), then .kiwi may have a place in the new landscape.

I haven't seen any demand for the kiwi extension from people I have spoken to . I see it more of a domain that someone may want for personal use. It is possibly a domain that can be bundled with a personal online service with email.

If you believe the site, there seem to be quite a few sold already. A simple whois should reveal the owner.

It's going to be later this year. Seems to be a few delays as they organise policy etc.

The policy document is still under consideration. Suspect it'll be around July/August when the DNC start the ball rolling. http://dnc.org.nz/second_level_proposal_c3 for those interested in the changes and how eligibility works.

I tried testing one which the website says is sold, and this is the result I got.

You may want to wait a day or two. Sunrise and landrush applications are still being processed, I believe. Wouldn't be surprised if that includes the presales of premium domains also.

Well if you feel like an investment you can get aussie.kiwi or dumb.kiwi for prices that are only slightly absurd (IMHO).
