I think it's the same situation as in Auckland, some businesses are obviously being hit hard - and they're making a LOT of noise about it.

We were down thre at the end of August, and it was pretty dire in the Tourism and Hosp sector,

I mean you could ring up and order Fergberger and then walk round and pick it your order 10 minutes later... unheard of.....

Lots of Tourism businesses are closed 2-3 days during the week, shops have cut back their opening hours, It was not far from tumbleweeds blowing down the mall....l. its gonna be really tough over summer once all the subsidies are gone....

Yes , construction is still going ahead, but projects are being deferred left right and centre, so its gonna hurt big time once the curent projects finish up.....

We have church people who didn't isolate after getting a test, who then infected others

We have a child from the church group going to school and then testing positive

We have people from the church group who aren't advising of all close contacts

and something about a supermarket being closed

What the ...

And we are allowing these people to freely leave Auckland

..... the authorities (MoH) have an uphill battle against cultural and religious beliefs and this also applies to their church ministers (Catholic/Anglican/Mormon/etc) who though they have a lot of influence also struggle and in some incidences do not want to rock the boat.

The only way I see around this is a lockdown to take away control from people. Plus strict enforcement of the lockdown. It also relies in people dobbing in anyone who is flouting lockdown. Otherwise future lockdowns to 'eliminate' the virus may become a waste of time. They seem to be far stricter in Australia, which could be one reason much of Australia did so well with eliminating it in some states without as much of a lockdown as NZ. Lack of enforcement can make lockdowns less effective could reduce the public acceptance of lockdowns in the future, if people see other people flouting it without consequences . I think the government could have an uphill battle now with future lockdowns if the public see some people flouting it due to lack of enforcement, meaning the lockdown isn't starving the virus of new hosts.

IMO tourism is dead around the world it seems. So even if our borders were open and we were operating as a Covid country with widespread infections like Europe, there would have been a dramatic drop in people visiting. Figures from Florida show this, even though they are open to tourists.

Getting good tradies people at the moment is almost impossible I have found. Some have work booked up for at least 3 months in advance and refuse to even quote. I suspect quite a few people are also putting money into their houses which may have been spent on an overseas trip. But I suspect in 3-6 months, there will be a lot looking for work. I do really wonder what is going to happen to NZ in the next 3-12 months. If the virus had leaked back in, we should have been in a far better position.

But.... people.

The contact tracers and public health departments are only as good as the information they are getting from the public. If they are mislead, or full contact info isn't forthcoming, we get what we've got.

We're at least 3-6 months away from seeing any real impacts of the recession. It's only then that the general public who are unaffected by this living in a dream world will truly realise the financial impact of what has occured.

Right now we're living in a fantasy world where the sharemarket keeps going up, property prices keep going up (and will very likely hit new growth records in the next 12 months under Labour) which is all masking the reality of what has happened.

And the NZ experience mirrors the rest of the developed world where most governments are following the QE/low interest rate path.

(so it's a bit ingenious to blame Labour for this).

It's all madness, of course, and can't be sustained. Or can it?

Housing growth isn't solely because of Reserve bank policy, some is a direct result of Govt policy and lack of action that could stop the massive growth.. But Labour want housing prices to keep rising, that's how a popular centralist (they're not even a left wing party these days) party stays popular. It's no different to what happened when National were in power - keeping the middle class happy is all that matters.

I work in finance and we are starting to see heavy equipment and ag machines in short supply, whether it's parts or whole machines. Either from factories shutting down overseas due to lockdowns, or shipping delays.

TLDR - It's no surprise, it's probably limited to a few churches, imported from the US, and it may be dangerously (for the rest of us) counter-productive to "throw the book" at them.

(Disclaimer - I'm an atheist / occasional spagnostic opportunist).

Many of the extreme fundamentalist churches out of the US consider Covid as a mild flu that is being deliberately overblown under a global conspiracy, the sole aim being to bring in a new world order which will see governments controlling and compulsorily medicating (ie vaccines) entire populations. They believe masks make the virus worse and that compulsory wear orders is an initial experiment in the controlling of citizens. Vaccines were good in the past but are now being used for evil, they contain aborted baby parts and altered DNA and, eventually, will be used to inject microchips into everyone for global monitoring. They believe that they are living in tribulation period foreshadowed in the Bible (Revelations) and that the Rapture is imminent.

Remove the tribulation/end days component, and the rest of what they believe pretty much lines up with the 'Plandemic' conspiracy which believes Covid was planned, is being driven by Bill Gates and Anthony Fauci, with global compulsory vaccination the outcome for both profit and citizen control.

So don't blame the Auckland Pacifika community for this, the madness emanates from white baptist fundamentalist America.

And when you had rumours floating around social media like wildfire in July claiming that a new lockdown was coming in August and a lockdown did happen in August then you've suddenly got people believing in the cause along with everything they've read.

Can we keep some of the politics/political commentary out of this? Because it will just attract the usual crowds. I'm particularly addressing posts to do with government policies re: housing and what house prices will do under X party etc.

He said despite QT buzzing at the time, a lot of businesses/eateries still stuck to their 'closed monday / tuesday' timetables. He said it was frustrating and bewildering.

I know businesses can't just open willy nilly - imagine if there was an information pipeline from the hotel bookings to businesses, allowing them to estimate future custom.

I've had a couple of trips down since lockdown #1 finished. Last time was a week after the school holidays, stayed with friends in Wanaka, the place was busy - couldn't get a table at a restaurant we wanted to go to, second choice was packed and we had to wait for a seat.
There seem to be plenty of NZ tourists with plenty of money around, but they're probably not going to be spending money on tourist traps things like bungy jumps, jet boat adventures etc - those are "one-offs" that once you've done it and posted a selfie on instagram, going back for seconds isn't likely. Ski fields were packed though. Even from Chch I thought I might go last week, was a perfect mid-week day, but by the time I was about to pack some gear, I get the message that both carparks were full at Mt Hutt - so they'd closed the road.
