Looking like yet another deferral of our holiday again - bit gutting as it was a birthday booked months ago and it's costing more and more each time to rebook it.

alexx:Lua, who is the chairman of the Pacific Leadership Forum's Pacific Response Coordination Team, said this spread [of disinformation] was especially rife among those with links to conservative evangelical or pentecostal churches in the United States. If US evangelicals are involved, we're in level 2 until Christmas, or until a vaccine comes.

Overseas holiday or are you anticipating higher level or regional restrictions in NZ?

Or, like me, preferring just to stick around home and avoid so-called 'unnecessary' travel?

Jetstar won't commit to flying locally until there's a cabinet announcement.

COVID-19 restrictions update: domestic flights suspended in New Zealand until 16 September
Last updated: 04/09/2020 04:33pm
Following the extension of the restrictions in New Zealand as a result of the coronavirus, and given the implications they have for air travel, we have temporarily suspended our domestic flights until at least 16 September.
As a low-cost carrier, Jetstar is unable to continue its operations in New Zealand whilst there is a requirement for airlines to keep the middle seat free.
The limitations on the number of customers that are allowed on board our aircraft make the operations of our flights unviable.

Understood - and I'd be surprised if that distancing requirement is dropped any time soon
Air NZ grounding their entire 777 fleet until "at least September 2021" doesn't bode well for overseas holidays returning to anything like normal levels any time soon either.

The only way I see around this is a lockdown to take away control from people. Plus strict enforcement of the lockdown. It also relies in people dobbing in anyone who is flouting lockdown. Otherwise future lockdowns to 'eliminate' the virus may become a waste of time. They seem to be far stricter in Australia, which could be one reason much of Australia did so well with eliminating it in some states without as much of a lockdown as NZ. Lack of enforcement can make lockdowns less effective could reduce the public acceptance of lockdowns in the future, if people see other people flouting it without consequences . I think the government could have an uphill battle now with future lockdowns if the public see some people flouting it due to lack of enforcement, meaning the lockdown isn't starving the virus of new hosts.
We already have a low tolerance for a strict lockdown and the government doesn't want to have another one, at least until after the general election.
You and I have very different interpretations when we compare NZ and Australia.
I've only noticed two ways that Australian governments have been stricter than the NZ government. Early on they forced overseas travellers into isolation. They then locked their state borders more tightly than we have been prepared to lock our provincial borders.
The overall Australian experience also appears to show the same thing as in NZ. After eliminating large social gatherings the largest and most difficult clusters to deal with have formed from tightly-linked social circles like those in the infected church membership in Auckland and among the infected families in Melbourne. The risk of transmission increases simply because people are regularly interacting in close-quarters with the same people and there most people in the cluster have been exposed to multiple individuals who could have transferred the infection.
I see the the Australian states outside of Victoria having smaller clusters because their clusters are primarily formed from more loosely-linked interactions and not from repeated close contact.
Just one new case in the Auckland outbreak today , + 6 recoveries,
https://www.health.govt.nz/news-media/media-releases/1-new-case-covid-19-17
Active cases have started to decline again, after bumping up due to the "mini-cluster"...
There are only 15 identified "close contacts" that had not been contacted - out of over 3000 people that's pretty amazing...
if low numbers of new cases continue over the weekend, and more recover, its looking good for some further relaxation in the levels on Wednesday, but the rules are being made up as we go along, and I suspect masks are a fact of life ( esp in Auckland) for at least another few weeks...
Good grief what the hell is wrong with these people. They are supposed to be leaders yet they are showing the exact opposite. Talk about selfish self interest and bugger the wider community.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

No surprises there.

Press release (emphasis is mine):
The Sport and Recreation Minister Grant Robertson says while it is disappointing the Rugby Championship will not be held in New Zealand, the country will host two Bledisloe Cup games in October and has the capacity in managed isolation facilities to host other international sporting events.
“We offered flexible quarantine arrangements that would have seen players able to train after spending three days in isolation and returning a negative test,” Grant Robertson said.
“Given the six recent cases in the Pumas, and with community outbreaks in Australia and South Africa it would be risky to go further than that and allow players to walk off a plane and go straight into training in a full team environment.
“Our flexible isolation proposal had the added bonus of protecting the tournament. If one player goes down with Covid they run the risk of infecting their whole team and putting the Rugby Championship in jeopardy where as we would have isolated cases at day three.
“We have been working hard on preparations to host the Rugby Championship since we were told in July by SANZAAR that they wanted New Zealand to host the tournament, and feel like we put forward a very attractive set of arrangements.
“We still believe this was a very competitive proposal, especially given that we have the best prospect of being able to have full stadiums for the games.
“We have always worked to strike a balance between keeping New Zealanders and visitors safe from COVID-19 and allowing the games to be played here. Since July Health, MIQ, Immigration and Sport officials have all been working with New Zealand Rugby on getting a plan in place,” Grant Robertson said.
“We supported New Zealand Rugby with their bid including offering government financial support, bespoke isolation facilities and a Ministry of Health approved isolation training plan.
“The proposed plan that we agreed with New Zealand Rugby had significant flexibility to enable the teams to train. This could happen in groups of 15 as early as three days after arrival if they test negative for COVID-19, and then for up to 25 players to train together after six days, dependent on another negative test.
“While we will not be hosting the Rugby Championship, we look forward to hosting Bledisloe Cup games scheduled for October, and are now in a position to host other international sporting events including cricket and netball,” Grant Robertson said.
Well, given the six recent cases with the Pumas I would say three days is nothing. Idiots.

mattwnz: How could they be playing within 3 days of arrival into NZ. Does COVID not infect rugby players in the same way? Also why does Rugby get special treatment. Are they forgetting that the world is in the middle of a pandemic and the only reason the virus spread to different country is because of travel where people didn’t quarantine properly for 14 days. We just have to look at the UK that have imposed new restrictions due to a new wave and can’t have any gatherings of more than 6 people. They may not have a Christmas if it continues until then.
Yep the way I see it.
Two Things here.
1/ Chain of infection.
So we have a whole team of people, any of which could be at a stage where at 3 days they come up clean.
Even if you do later test and pick those up a few days later ,
by then you may have some more newly infected who clear your test, and can go on to infext others x days later.
Rinse and repeat.
Teams also have a number of coaches assistants, admin, its a lot of people for this to go through.
2/ Aussie was never going to let New Zealand have this anyway.
They would have come up with some way $$$ , home advantage, and prestige remain there.
