Being picky but I'd call it a hybrid rather than EV.

I don't think hybrids should be exempt from RUC personally. (or should there be a imimium pure EV range before you are exempt)

For 168k I'd buy a Tesla.

Mind you I don't have a boat.

Well, I quite like the concept of this vehicle and it only costs a mere $158,400 and has no road user charges. Sure you could get 465km of pure electric range if you bought the Tesla Model X 100D, but I think this will cost well over $200,000 here?

If you're worried about being poisoned by emissions, you will never fly or go on a cruise or do just about anything else! By the time the world is "all-electric" it will be far too late to "save the planet"!

I was merely pointing out that it's not an EV, or one with very short range.

Sure, it's a nice car. A Tesla Model X 100D base is just under 170K. Every EV helps to eliminate air pollution which saves lives, i remain hopeful we an avert the worst partly through widespread EV adoption!

This would be a real shame. To be fair the bus operator has signed a contract with Wrightspeed who have failed to deliver a prototype for testing.

NZ Bus is going to lose two thirds of its bus service business with GWRC. So all bets could be off.

No, I'm not saying that I'm actually in favour of doing as much as we can to combat global warming! But I just wonder whether we are doing too little too late to actually be able to reverse the process. But perhaps someone more expert than myself can tell me what proportion of the world's emissions is caused by ICE vehicles?

Making an impassioned speech at the Starmus science festival in Trondheim, Norway, the astrophysicist said it was crucial to establish colonies on Mars and the Moon, and take a Noah's Ark of plants, animals, fungi and insects, to start creating a new world.

Prof Hawking said it was only a matter of time before the Earth as we know it is destroyed by an asteroid strike, soaring temperatures or over-population.

I have a lot of respect for Stephen Hawking and this idea is not new. Decades ago Robert Heinlein said 'the earth is much too fragile a basket for mankind to put all of its eggs in' (quoted according to my unreliable memory).

I personally feel it is important to colonise other worlds, and I hope we do before it is too late. But I have a hard time following the logic that we should do it because we are making the earth uninhabitable. Asteroids aside, the earth is still a far, far better starting point for establishing a viable human settlement, regardless of how polluted or overpopulated it is, than any other place imaginable in the solar system. Even if the atmosphere is poisoned, at least it is an atmosphere, which is a lot more than can be said for the moon or mars. The amount of technology needed to make or keep the earth habitable will always be vastly less than anything needed on mars or elsewhere. We should definitely go to mars and the other planets, and we should make them as liveable as possible and establish settlements there, but they will never be as people friendly as the planet we evolved on. I just don't see that as a sensible argument.

I can't see, no matter how hostile here, how mars is anywhere near as pleasant. Think about it.

Sorry if this has already been brought up, but what does the government plan to do about the large drop in fuel taxes that they currently collect and use for road building and maintenance? The only alternative that I can see is for user charges like diesel vehicles have.

And I would like to explore a new world too. Not some scabby old rock like Mars. I'd like to see a new world with with evolved biota. Large plants and mobile animals.
