I am annoyed that Mazda don't seem to be doing anything EV wise; I really want to get a 2019/2020 Mazda 3 that was just revealed at the LA Auto Show but with no signs of an EV model (or even a hybrid - just claims that it has even better fuel economy). My current Mazda 3 has claims it has great fuel economy but real world driving around town adds 1/3 onto that claim ...

Maybe some intertia there because of the Ford relationship.

I know what you mean, I wish Toyota built EV's. I drive a Nissan EV not because it is a great car, but because it is the only realistic option. I don't like Nissan's ergonomics (or lack of) and the way they wast space with big voids.

Yeah, funny how they a dead against welfare for people but corporate welfare is the norm. When it comes to corporate welfare the N.Z. Govt is far more right wing: Buy up Air New Zealand's distressed shares dirt cheap, invest some cash to save the company then sell shares at a profit so the taxpayer is rewarded for their investment. The US Govt would own 3/4 of the banking system and 1/2 of the car manufacturers if they walked the the american talk. Instead they reward incompetence.

I find that I use about 20% more than the combined ADR figures. The specs for the Skyactiv-X engine haven't been released yet, but it's sounding like it will probably be under 5l/100km. Based on my usage it would cost about $1200 a year to fuel whereas my back of an envelope calculation had an EV costing me about $500 a year. So, any savings would almost completely disappear when RUC eventually gets introduced on EVs.

Yes, I get that economics isn't the only imperative here, but if we really want to quickly cut our carbon emissions then the first thing to do is to get the old heaps out of the national fleet. Given the number of registered vehicles in NZ we could probably scrap the 20% of worst emitting vehicles and not even need to replace them.

Public transport, the majority of power companies, urban water systems etc. - the large majority all publicly owned. Even in Canada it's the same, power companies, insurance (e.g ICBC mandatory vehicle insurance), etc. the majority all owned by the public. Couple this with the protection of their economy, and they are far from the fully open free market economy they claim they are.

I suspect 300km of usable range is the sweet-spot. By accounts and Tesla's progress, that sort of range should be filtering through to MY2020 vehicles. It's just the right point at which you'd have to stop for a breather on a long distance drive anyway, so your one car goes from being suitable for 90% of trips to 99.9%.

Yes, you can do all of that in a car with 150km range. It's not joined to your house by a cable, you know.

Yes, you can do all of that in a car with 150km range. It's not joined to your house by a cable, you know.

You could do all that with a range of 30km, that doesn't change the fact it would be more tedious and impractical than it needs to be.

The competition for EVs is 2nd hand cars that can do 500km on a tank with no issues.

Not to mention David Attenborough's point about collapsing civilisation and the extinction of most life on earth. Maybe people just need to quit being so damned selfish and put things like the survival of the planet ahead of their personal convenience. Unless, of course, you deny there is a problem.

You are making the possibly dangerous assumption that petrol / electricity price relativities stay about the same as they are now.
If - actually I believe 'when' - the price of carbon goes up to levels that result in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, NZ's electricity supply will be hopefully 90%+ renewables, and not much affected by a very high carbon price/tax. Petrol, well, ouch!

You are right, to a degree.
The problem is that the "20% of worst emitting vehicles" would I think largely belong to the 15% of the population least able to afford to replace them.
