I just don't see our Police departments getting away with spending $90k per car.

I'm  pretty sure that's the reason that the Government Fleet EV "transition" has stalled/died...

They just cannot find a way to make the political optics acceptable...

NZF has to go. Or Labour/Greens dont select NZF as a coalition partner if that will scuttle key deals, or it will drag more cash out of the budget. National can have them

For that to happen there needs to be a significant increase in the vote for Labour/ Greens,

On current voting intentions, If NZ First make is back to Parliament they get to call the shots...

And its likley NZF will be back, but L/G need to not go with NZF if they will be hobbled (by policy blocks and drawing on large cash). Its just not worth it. NZF can go with National who also won't want to be hobbled. If both declined NZF then we have a minority Govt, unsure what that wouidl bring, apart from not being able to do much. NZF would be miffed so that would probably be a circus. Take the big transport spend, that would still happen, but modified, so maybe a minority Govt would not be so bad.

If they bought EV's thats a plus. If EV's cost less to run thats a plus. So any EV premium woudn't be an issue IMO. Are there 15,000 compatible new EV's available into NZ in the next couple of years?

Sadly, probably true. My guess is that the current media blitz by Shane Jones is to improve his odds of winning Northland (on the back of some very rich pork barrels), and maybe a precursor to a change of leadership. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

But... we have a minority Govt now, so we already know what "not being able to do much" means.

We have a majority Govt right now. As to not doing much, well there is KB, but they have potterd away with other stuff, as compared to doing nothing, as compared to actually doing nothing and letting the market run the country. But we could do with the EV feebate, and use the PGF and billion trees cash for NZ. If we have a minority Govt what Labour wants will be blocked, what National wants will be blocked, but there woudl be policues that can go forward perhaps, just modified, the tranpsort big spend being one example. NZF may well then just fade away, if its seen as a block to the two main parties. Seems some of the NZF donors regret ther donation now

On that, take the feebate with a minority Govt. Both parties would want an EV measure. Labour/Greens as they want one, National as they need to be seen to be climate change aware. So they both rehash the blocked feebate package, that can happen in a minority Govt

For the "lowly" departments, sure.

However, a Tesla Model S is cheaper than the list price for a BMW 7 Series that the crown uses. I'm sure they're getting a discount on the BMWs but I don't imagine it would make the cost substantially lower than the Model S which is a pretty good equivalent to the 7 series.

It would bring another election...

To form a government you need to demonstrate to the GG that you have the "confidence of the House"  (basically is able to prove they can pass a budget and other major legislation

Getting a bit off topic, but...

The current government, since October 2017, is a coalition between Labour and New Zealand First, led by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. A minority government, the coalition is reliant on the support of the Green Party in order to command a majority in the House of Representatives through a confidence-and-supply agreement. (Wikipedia)

The billion trees is a con... the vast majority of these are pinus radiata, replacing trees that have recently been cut down, and destined to be cut down themselves in about 30 years. There's no real environmental benefit at all from these.

I suspect that the NZF donors only regret that their donations were made public... after all, the reason they split them was to keep them secret. And the racing industry has certainly got what they wanted from Winston.

From your Wiki link

A minority government, minority cabinet or minority parliament is a cabinet formed in a parliamentary system when a political party or coalition of parties does not have a majority of overall seats in the parliament.[1]

Doesnt L/G/N have a majority of seats? If National needed ACT, thats also your minority Govt?

There are a few Police departments in the US that have added a Tesla to their fleet, such as this one. I don't know if an EV would suit every Police car duty but I think something with the range of a Model 3 would probably be plenty for the majority. I just don't see our Police departments getting away with spending $90k per car.

They will be getting the AOG pricing, so if they are paying 90k that is a significant vehicle, and that is assuming they are purchasing it outright

That's what NZF says, yes, but they don't have a confidence & supply majority without the Greens. That's why several Green party MPs are ministers.

It's right there in the quote. Where is the bold, underlined, flashing, fluorescent red, size 48 font style when you need it?

"A minority government, the coalition is reliant on the support of the Green Party". The Green Party is NOT member of the coalition.

NZF and Labour have a Coalition agreement, but only a confidence and supply agreement with the Greens, this allows them to form a minority government (NZF+L).  They can appoint any MP to be a minister, and it would have been easier for Labour to get the Greens support by giving them a couple of minister positions
