lchiu7: I just hope we can use Tesla chargers here one day. Everytime I go to the Countdown in Johonsonville I see a banks of Tesla super chargers all unoccupied and Johnsonville only has one public charging station at the library. I guess most people who own Tesla's either don't deign to shop at Countdown or have their groceries delivered  from New World :-)

My MY arrives next month, and I’ll be using it for my weekly shop at the ever-so-prol Pak ‘n’ Save! (I’ll need to, after how much money I’ve wasted, I mean invested, in accessories!)

i think they are not cheap. so charge at home. cheap.

superchargers are for travelling.

so makes sense to have them in small towns between large towns.

or at tourist towns where people are not at home.

what do i know my Leaf does not have enough juice to get up the hill to get out of my town! (i tried, battery went flat 2ks into the hillclimb at 100ks)

There is no PaknSave in Johnsonville and the nearest one in Petone isn't on the way from Johnsonville. But you could charge in Johnsonville and then whizz down the Ngauranga gorge and then on the Hutt Motorway to Petone.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

I don’t 😁

The thing about the Johnsonville Superchargers is they are the ones for the Wellington region to service SH1 traffic. The next set are in Palmerston North. Seeing 6 in the car park by Countdown may have given you the false impression they are ubiquitous throughout NZ. They are not.

Locals are unlikely to use them, as it’s much cheaper to charge at home (as Batman pointed out above). They really are for charge and go stops on a road trip. And you pay a premium for being able to top up and get going.*

As has been pointed out in the M3 thread, Tesla SCs are not publicly subsidised.

*However, at 50c/kWh (according to Plugshare) it would appear to be almost the same rate as Chargenet (25c/kWh+25c/min).

Chargenet's hyper rapid chargers are probably a better comparison to Tesla's superchargers. The rate on Chargenet's 300kW chargers is 60c/kWh + 35c/minute and based on the info they have on their website for the Bombay facility the 50kW units there are the same price. Normally 50kW stand alone units are 25c/kWh + 25c/minute though some differ.

I use a fast charger maybe once a month. Almost all is my charging is at home. The bigger the car's battery the more you charge at home.

Not at all. I was completely aware this is the only set of chargers in the Welly area. In fact I even used them once when shopping at Countdown but I was driving a rental M3 at the time so not easy charging at home.

Totally - I recall wondering why Tesla built a Supercharger in my city (PN) before they had one in Wellington; I think it was someone here on GZ that schooled me on this!

The Johnsonville charger is probably the one I’ll use the most, as it’s perfectly placed for a 10-15 minute top-up (if needed) when coming back from Wgtn (or topping up before going onto the SI) - easy to get off the motorway and back on with minimal fuss, whereas Wellington City ones are far less convenient. Also, many of these are only 50kW, so that 25c per minute fee is going to be a larger proportion of the bill compared to using a faster charger (as well as taking longer, of course!).

Looking around the lower NI I see many of the current Chargenet chargers are actually 25kW not 50kW; these are charged at 15c/min (vs 25c/min). It seems there may still be many of these across the rest of the country too.

I was wondering whether A Better Route Planner takes speed of charging into account when proposing which charging stations to use, and it apparently does (though how successfully, I don’t know):

However, we always try to select the fastest charging options available along the route and we are looking into if a 'minimum number of stalls' could be an option.

[I totally get that needing to use fast chargers is relatively rare, the time we will need to are when on holiday - I clearly have a need to feel comfortable in knowing how things will work before we embark on our first road trip in an EV!]

The wop wops in the south are cold and wet yet very popular destinations for locals and tourists.

I am hoping for more chargers. If everyone has an EV one slow charger here and one faster charger there isn't going to be nice when it's 3C and raining.

So if I understand this correctly, a 60kw battery car (like the Atto 3) at home on a 10a plug

10a = about 2.5wk/hr charging (?)

60/2.5 = 24 - so 24 hours to charge from flat on standard 3 pin plug

Assuming the car was plugged in at night, utilising offpeak rates), that buys you about 8 hours charge per night at cheap rate.

So long as you plugged the car in 2-3 times a week overnight, this would cover the charging for normal use (200-250kms per week)?

Assuming this is correct understanding, the 60kw of power @ 15c/kw is then about $9 in costs for that 400 odd KM of range, so $ 4-6 per week?

My wife's car is looking uneconomical to repair so just looking at either splurging on a full EV or not.

Thanks

Sen

Seems about right to me.  The other way of looking at it is if your daily commute is 75km, that's about 20% of a full charge, or 12kwh, or 5 hours at 10A.  So for most people, plugging in overnight is easily enough to cope with daily use.  And instead of burning 6 litres of petrol at $19, you're using $1.80 of electricity

That's because Tesla bought the chassis from Lotus 😉

They didn't just copy-paste.

Fair point, but again there are plenty of counterpoints. The Ora Cat is designed by an ex-Porsche engineer, so comes by its looks honestly, and on the other hand there are plenty of Westeners who make their living tearing down cars and selling the engineering reports. It's hard to imagine you'd pay a six-figure sum for one of those just to get a cool poster to hang on the wall.

Don't think you'll get more than 8A on a standard plug in charger.
I have my MG plugged into a TP-Link smart plug and the most it ever draws is about 1750W.

We're with Frank Energy and night rate from 11pm-7am is just under 11c/kwh.

As long as you can get more in the car than you need the next day you'll be ok. In our leaf I'm doing about 450km a week for under $10, our petrol car was costing $120 for that mileage last time we filled it up.

There is other options to charge, we got evnex boxes installed that can operate at 7kw but our leafs can't handle that much power in. You can also get a 15 amp caravan socket installed that would increase your charge rate and won't cost as much as a dedicated evse. The only thing I'd be worried about is with bigger batteries and slower charging it'll take a few days planning if you want to go on a longer trip to fully charge it using cheap power.
