I have to admit sitting here watching Trumps address to Congress and cannot help but feel whoever put this together for him, did a very good job. At the same time I am sitting here waiting for the teleprompter to fail and it will all come crashing down!

I watched the speech and the first reactions. It was a good speech, especially by Trump's standards. He actually almost sounded 'presidential'. If he carries on like this, he may well settle in as some here have suggested, and end up as a relatively 'normal' president. Maybe he is finally listening to advice and adjusting his approach.

 

The speech came across as reasoned and reasonable, but it was light on substance, more slogans than real policy. Where he did specify things he intended to do, there was no indication of how he would actually go about them or pay for them. He also seems to want to debt-finance the rebuilding of America and the military and his tax cuts and health care and this is anathema to die-hard Republican Tea Party conservatives. The question is very much what kind of support he is likely to get from the Republican Congress when he actually starts trying to implement his ideas. But his speech was well-received and he got a lot of standing ovations and only a couple of small boos.

Rosie began with the text of the US Declaration of Independence, from 1776.

Yeah, I got that. They don't like each other. I did catch the first part of her diatribe because I know enough of the Declaration but after that it was just hysterical garble. If she could tone it down a few notches she might be much more effective.

 

I am not aware of any transcript. CNN has one of Trump's speech.

Trump (or alt:president Bannon) managed to slip "VOICE" - Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement in amongst a pile of cliches.

 

According to the Independent, the VOICE agency is expected to publish a weekly list of all crimes committed by immigrants, suggesting that anyone who has moved to the US, both documented and undocumented, could find their name on the public document.

 

 For example Breitbart has a "black crime" tag:

Yes, gotta say that part of the speech shocked me. He made the rest sound almost reasonable. Somebody wrote him a good speech and must have told him not to ad lib any.

Edit: anyone else disturbed by the 'guests' he had on hand in the gallery?

According to this, Trump told 51 lies in 61 minutes during his first address to congress.

 

[edit - I'm not claiming that source as reliable]

 

I'm not sure why some of the media are reporting that the speech was some kind of a "turning point" in Trump's presidency, nor why he should be lauded for being able to hold it together - without resorting to abuse and word salad - when reading a scripted message to the faithful.  Being coherent for an hour isn't something to celebrate under such circumstances - that was merely being "Teleprompter Trump".  
"Twitter Trump" seems to have had the mute button pressed.

Interesting read. It's very clear where Trump ad-libs his own thoughts into the pre-prepared speech. Which leaves me wondering how much of the speech is his own thinking, how much is stuff written that he understands and agrees with, and how much he's just parroting what's put in front of him.
