Why would these people lie?

Habit

To quote something posted on NYT :

At this point it’s easier to list the Trump officials who haven’t been caught lying under oath than those who have. This is not an accident.

Critics of our political culture used to complain, with justification, about politicians’ addiction to spin — their inveterate habit of downplaying awkward facts and presenting their actions in a much better light than they deserved. But all indications are that the age of spin is over. It has been replaced by an era of raw, shameless dishonesty.

There's an article in today's Herald about the Russian neo-fascist Aleksandr Dugin's proposed geopolitical strategy for Russia to "become great again" , which includes the following:

Russia should use its special services within the borders of the United States to fuel instability and separatism, for instance, provoke "Afro-American racists". Russia should "introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics.

Kind of scary, advocating break up of the EU / the UK being "cut off", France & Germany becoming a bloc with a firm "anti-Atlantacist" tradition.
"The book emphasizes that Russia must spread Anti-Americanism everywhere: "the main 'scapegoat' will be precisely the U.S."

Perfect.

That's an idealist russian, the way the world is going, a common enemy is going to unite everyone - at the moment that's those bad guys in Syria (and everywhere else that's infiltrated).

I get the feeling that Bannon sees the "common enemy" as Islam and secularism, but that Russian neo-fascist Dugin saw the common enemy as liberal America - which it sought to weaken. So far that's going very well.
He describes Western notions of “human rights, anti-hierarchy and political correctness” as “the face of the beast, the anti-Christ”.

Incredibly beautiful – one of the best moments of my life.” - Dugin's comment about Trump's inauguration.

Dugin's influence on Putin is disputed. Bannon's influence on Trump is absolute - because Trump is an egomaniac moron - and Bannon put him where he is.

The concept of Trump winning POTUS is fantasy - so perhaps instead of a one-line unqualified rejection - you could elaborate on why you think Russia was desperate to see Trump elected, and rejoiced.

I think once in a while, something unexpected aka "fantasy" happens. Like winning the lottery. But that's the exception not the rule IMO.

Here's a lottery win.

Dugan's thoughts from March 2016.

Some good Russian wit there - "The saxophonists wife" etc.

You couldn't make this stuff up. It'd be great to think this fascist lunatic nutter was just another fascist lunatic nutter - but his reputation as "Putin's Rasputin" has some substance to it.

Tweetstorm from POTUS.

This is wrong on so many levels, even if he believes these unsubstantiated claims are real, he's seriously unhinged announcing it this way.
Origin of "the story" seems to be Breitbart. Scary IMO that a POTUS would use a CT / alt:right "news media" organisation to stay informed.

Breitbart feeding Trump news to provoke his paranoid/delusional tendencies is almost cruel.

Obama has now denied it through a spokesperson.

Quote:"A cardinal rule of the Obama administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice," Obama spokesman Kevin Lewis said in a statement Saturday. "As part of that practice, neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false."
from http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-accuses-obama-wiretapping-phones-trump-tower/story?id=45905776

Might be prompted by 'On the Media's' podcast story about how the Obama administration scrambled before the handover to leave as many breadcrumbs as possible about Russian interference in the election so that the truth could be found. Or by desperation to deflect from the whole Russian thing and/or emoluments stories (i.e. China paying Trump millions for Tower space) Whatever has him hot under the collar that's a lot of tweets within minutes of each other.

Also Trump has decided to roll back tailpipe emissions standards for the auto industry.

Regarding the wiretaps, except for Tweets, there's been no proof, and no news organization has picked it up yet.

I'm putting this in the same category as Trump's "voter fraud" claim

I expect more Chewbacca Defense from Trump.

The Russia thing won't go away.

I'm wondering if Trump is waking up to the fact that Putin is not his friend and never was.

If he manages to see that, then he might also see how he's been played by Bannon and the alt:right - and stop blaming Obama, Clinton etc for the deep pile of crap he's put himself in, and the threat that poses to the world.
