Washington Post Fact Checker (as at 31 July 2018)

President Trump has made 4,229 false or misleading claims in 558 days: That’s an overall average of nearly 7.6 claims a day.
For the president’s first 100 days, he averaged 4.9 a day. In June and July, the president averaged 16 claims a day.

What if Hillary Clinton had won the election and said the same things?

  • Imagine if Hillary Clinton had won the election.
  • Imagine if the Russians had hacked into Trump’s campaign to get Clinton elected.
  • Imagine Clinton then said she didn’t believe the hacking had anything to do with the election and called the reporting of it “fake news.”
  • Imagine if Clinton had then cozied up to Putin and dissed our oldest and most valued allies in Europe.
  • Imagine if a special counsel’s investigation into all this netted more than two dozen indictments and numerous guilty pleas, and Clinton called it a “witch hunt.”
  • Imagine if Clinton went to Helsinki and took the side of the Russian strongman over America’s own intelligence agencies and Department of Justice.
  • Imagine you then found out that Clinton was provided intelligence-agency proof of the meddling weeks before her inauguration, and proof as well at Putin had ordered it.

Would you still forgive the lies?

White House Counsel, Don McGahn, Has Cooperated Extensively in Mueller Inquiry

By Michael S. Schmidt and Maggie Haberman

Aug. 18, 2018

WASHINGTON — The White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, has cooperated extensively in the special counsel investigation, sharing detailed accounts about the episodes at the heart of the inquiry into whether President Trump obstructed justice, including some that investigators would not have learned of otherwise, according to a dozen current and former White House officials and others briefed on the matter.

In at least three voluntary interviews with investigators that totaled 30 hours over the past nine months, Mr. McGahn described the president’s fury toward the Russia investigation and the ways in which he urged Mr. McGahn to respond to it. He provided the investigators examining whether Mr. Trump obstructed justice a clear view of the president’s most intimate moments with his lawyer.

Among them were Mr. Trump’s comments and actions during the firing of the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, and Mr. Trump’s obsession with putting a loyalist in charge of the inquiry, including his repeated urging of Attorney General Jeff Sessions to claim oversight of it. Mr. McGahn was also centrally involved in Mr. Trump’s attempts to fire the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, which investigators might not have discovered without him.

For a lawyer to share so much with investigators scrutinizing his client is unusual. Lawyers are rarely so open with investigators, not only because they are advocating on behalf of their clients but also because their conversations with clients are potentially shielded by attorney-client privilege, and in the case of presidents, executive privilege.

'A prosecutor would kill for that,' said Solomon L. Wisenberg, a deputy independent counsel in the Whitewater investigation, which did not have the same level of cooperation from President Bill Clinton’s lawyers. 'Oh my God, it would have been phenomenally helpful to us. It would have been like having the keys to the kingdom.'

People are much more likely to say something is "rigged" when they close to losing, or have lost.

High-profile political donor’s push to impeach ‘corrupt’ US president Donald Trump

Tom Steyer is on a mission to overthrow the “most corrupt president” in history. With $1.6b behind him, he might pull it off.

Donald Trump has his fair share of critics - but perhaps none quite so powerful as Tom Steyer.

And unfortunately for the divisive United States President, the billionaire hedge fund manager and activist is on a serious mission to end his political career.

Mr Steyer founded the multimillion-dollar Need to Impeach campaign - a movement solely focused on calling out Mr Trump’s alleged “corruption” and bringing him to justice.

The group is convinced there’s enough evidence for an impeachment, and if successful, it could become the biggest political scandal of our times.

"Trump is a danger to the US"

I believe, as a former Russia analyst for most of my career ... that the President of the United States is enthralled to Vladimir Putin.

There is no other way to explain his behaviour.

You keep thinking this can't go on, something has to give pretty soon. I hope it is soon. I don't know how much more I can take.

There are so many horrible scenarios I can think of and the number just keeps growing. One of the things that has kept America from the brink in spite of a powerful military has been the traditional strong apolitical stance of that military. Yet now we see older high-ranking officers and former officers denouncing Trump and effectively taking sides. Will younger officers maintain discipline or will they also take sides? I can see youthful gung-ho types lining up behind Trump while more conservative traditional officers feel impelled to defend the old values. A split like this really could mean the end of American democracy. I hope it doesn't happen. Lt. Col. Peters scares the hell out of me.

Now Trump does not want to go ahead with the Mueller interview because he's afraid of a "perjury trap".

Perhaps not lying would be a good way of not falling into that?

So, how does Cohen and Manafort and Mueller affect Trump after today? A workmate tells me its all over, Trump is as good as in jail, but I assume it would take a lot of time and legal back and forth for that to occur? "I should have read all the document, I didnt read this and so on"

As of 11 am Wednesday NZ time, from the conservative magazine "Bloomberg"

Michael Cohen’s Lawyer Says Trump Directed Him to ‘Commit a Crime’

"President Donald Trump’s longtime lawyer and fixer Michael D. Cohen admitted he made illegal campaign contributions at the behest of Trump, Cohen’s lawyer said after he pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations.

The admission dealt a blow to Trump, coming just as a jury in Virginia found his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, guilty of tax and bank fraud charges. While Trump’s name wasn’t mentioned at the Cohen hearing, the crimes he admitted to -- in particular that he made a $130,000 payment to someone at the candidate’s direction to silence them -- match the money Cohen paid to porn actress Stephanie Clifford shortly before the 2016 election to keep quiet about an affair she claimed to have had with Trump years earlier. Cohen also admitted that he participated in a scheme to pay $150,000 to a second woman, Karen McDougal, to keep her story out of the press.

Lanny Davis, one of Cohen’s lawyers, issued a statement after the plea saying that Trump directed Cohen to 'commit a crime.'
