We have a couple of in-ceiling speakers mounted into the soffit of our house. The metal grille has started to rust but the actual speaker inside seems fine. I don't know where to start between replacing the whole speakers or replacing the metal grille itself (these can be popped out - are they usually a "universal" type thing that can just be replaced?) or can you get plastic covers that will just go over the whole thing?

Any thoughts / insights appreciated!

Sandblast and repaint the current grill perhaps?

Yeah, that would be the obvious thing to do but one of them has gone a bit too far

+1 for carefully taking off the grills, take it to a powder coat guy and get them to sand blast, powdercoat...but it might add a mm or two to the thickness???

How far 'gone' are they i.e. metal broken?

google the speaker type and see if you can source replacement grills if a standard size??

Use a paperclip or similar to pull the grill (assuming they're alloy press-in type and not steel grills held on by magnets).

Then take the speaker out of the soffit, see the make / model and contact the distributor or retailer and see if they can get you a replacement. If not, then go on a hunt...
