So Apple should never have got into phones/entertainment?
Virgin should never have got into mobile/communication?
Google should have stuck with being a search engine?
Amazon should just stick to selling books?

I dont agree that a company should be restricted to any one sector, if there are opportunities to collaborate in other industries or expand their business.

These days communications are vital to delivering entertainment services, wether that be via satellite, fibre, etc...Why shouldn't they try to capitalise on the profits in the content & service, rather than just the small chunk they're making on providing the connection?

Excellent point, and further to it: Virgin should never have got into Airlines, or anything other than selling records?

Go for it Spark, but don't ruin your new brand as you perceive you have ruined your old one (I personally have no negative connotations with Telecom, I think they have done a good job at riding through some adversity).

I don't like the name Spark at all. I suppose it will catch on (let's hope so for their sake).

At least Telecom was an authority name.

They say they are moving towards different projects, internet tv, whatever, but these are still telecommunications services.

TV isn't telecommunications service ... it's a service that uses existing telecommunications services to deliver it's content. Retail shops are not a transport delivery service just because all their stock is brought in via trucks.

Two letters to the editor from yesterday's NZ Herald (25 February, 2014) ...

So Telecom is to become Spark. It is a pity that it did not get its priorities right before spending all this money.

It certainly has almost no human bright sparks on its payroll, or it would have prioritised getting Xtra email working properly and dumped the problem-plagued Yahoo.

The new name is laughable. There has not been a spark of consumer assistance for years.

Why would a company specialising in communications of various kinds change to a name most suited to an electrical repair shop? Spark is used as a name for a dog. Maybe it will not prove inappropriate after all. It is not wise to tempt fate.

I don't know why people are getting so passionate about this. Maybe people still think they are govt owned or something, as I have heard people say that the money would be better spent paying for food for low income families. But this is a private company, and are largely no different from any other ISP.It is up to them if they want to trash a long established brand name, with something very generic. The ironic thing is that there is more brand recognition for brands such as Orcon which is more of a unique name, than there is for a more generic name like Spark, which will now need to go on a big marketing campaign to get people to know the brand. I wonder if in a year if more people will know the telecom brand, or the spark brand. Personally I think it is a very dangerous move, and I think shareholders should have voted on this change. I would be more for them abbreviating telecom to TNZ (c) TCNZ or , NZT or NZTC, like British telecom did with BT, which I think is a clever way of reinventing a brand without trashing it. Infact I quite like TNZ (c) as a brand name, especially if it was pronounced TEE N ZEE.

The change of logo got sold as not being about Telecom itself like the old logo but about being "anything the customer wanted it to be". The "This little light of mine" campaign seemed to end up with the logo being called Spark (probably because Telecom bosses needed to call it something). Now Spark has done full circle and is all about Telecom.

When all past announcements are only a Google away you'd think they'd review what they said yesterday before writing tomorrow's press release.

Probably just goes to show that explanations like that for logos and brand names can just be PR BS. A company is in business to make money and provide a quality service for that money, which will then grow the company and make it more valuable. So they want a unique logo, brand and colour scheme that is memorable, and there is a science to it a people react better to certain colours. Red is a good sales colour for example, especially around the fast food industry.

How can you make this comment about a service that so far we only know the name of? You should be glad, we desperately need competition in this space, Telecom are as well positioned to make as good a go at this as any other company in NZ.
