Sideface: Has the speed upgrade made any real difference (good or bad) to your Internet experience, actual download speeds etc?
Compared to others here, my 100Mbps connection had been solid for the last 6 months or so. I've definitely noticed better performance on the new 200/20 plan - I downloaded some large ISOs from Microsoft and they maxed out the connection speed.
Sideface:
This thread is now 34 pages long, and a significant number of Geekzoners have upgraded to "FibreX" from the old slower HFC plans.
Discussion has - predictably - been mostly technical - installs, routers, speed tests etc.
But what about real-world performance?
Has the speed upgrade made any real difference (good or bad) to your Internet experience, actual download speeds etc?
Some examples.
Steam server 30-45MB/S
Torrents ive seen up to 60MB/s however they tend to finish before they reach max potential.
Generally 1.5-2GB/min Down.
Upload is consistent around 8-10MB/s
Gaming I have had a couple of stutters but very similar to HFC.
I've had an interesting experience with my FibreX upgrade.
Ordered on Wednesday 26th October, was told by the first customer service rep it wasn't available at my house (the online checker states that only ADSL is available, despite having been on 130/10 for the past two years). I had previously checked availability at my neighbours on either side and across the road, who all were showing as available.
Got bounced through to technical team who said I would need to talk to customer services, explained I had just come from there. The technical team looked into it and then put me back through to customer service who confirmed it was available. Placed my order and 37 minutes after making the call, was told I would get a call from Downer scheduling an install.
Thursday 27th - no call from Downer.
Friday 28th - no call from Downer.
Monday 31st - I sent a tweet to Vodafone who DMed me and said they would get someone to call me. Was advised to let them know if I didn't hear from anyone within 24 hours.
Tuesday 1st Nov - I sent another DM saying I hadn't heard from anyone and 24 hours had passed.
Wednesday 2nd - I got a call Wednesday morning. No record of my earlier order, so I placed my order again. I asked for email confirmation that my order was placed and wanted confirmation that I would get the $100 credit. Was told yep, I understand you want a paper trail - we'll email you with confirmation in 15 minutes - no email received. Got a call from Downer at 7pm, install scheduled for Thursday 3rd between 12:30pm and 4:30pm. (yaay, getting somewhere!)
Thursday 3rd - left work at midday to wait for install. Received call from the technician at 3:30pm saying he was running late due to other installs, I'm okay with that as long as it doesn't get rescheduled. Was told it would be between 6 and 6:30pm. Got a call from Downer about 6pm saying the technician was running late. A further call from the technician at 8:15pm saying he had just finished his previous job and was on his way.
Thursday 3rd, 9:30pm - install complete and painless. Me happy. Now, just need to make sure I get the $100 credit <sigh>
Big thanks to the Vodafone tweeter peep ^JJ and the actual Downer technician Sean (helpful and friendly guy). Not so much for Vodafone customer service with initially being told it was unavailable, losing my order, subsequent delays in calling me back, lack of order confirmation and then taking half a day off work when I didn't need to. I know demand is high and they're busy, but yeah, could do better.
Edit: a couple of words
SteveC: I ended up deciding that while I would like a bigger router, I only really need a Mikrotik 750gr3 . Excellent little router. The suppliers claim it will handle a 1 gig connection OK, but I only have 200/20, so no worries there.
There was a little gotchya setting it up to run on FibreX, so if you have any Mikrotik device (they all use the same OS), PM me, and I'll send you details.
Steve
We've done the same and it's limited to about 650 down. 100 up is fine. Which is fine for the moment but it may get upgraded in the medium term. The H659 didn't cut it with only 8 static DHCP leases available.
They were trying to charge me the $5, but I said that I had been told on about 3 different occasions that this would be free and after the accounts team looking into things they accepted that and said it would be free.
Time will tell on the $5 charge and the Static IP remaining static.

Just checking out Vodafone page about FibreX, can somebody explain why it say 'Up to 200Mbps download speed' but in the 'Important things to know' section it states:
"Gigabit network speed capability exceeds user speed capability. Actual user speeds will vary and are affected by various factors including how you’re connected to the internet (using a Gigabit Ethernet cable is better than WiFi, which could have a large impact on speed), the hardware and software used, number of devices connected, time of day, and where the data is downloaded from. In really good conditions, we expect you’ll get download speeds of up to 700-900 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 90-95 Mbps"
Why is there a difference in expected speed?
There's two FibreX plans available. 200/20 and 1000/100 ("max'). If you're on the package builder screen, click the plus for the gigabit option.
Been reading this thread, dont think I'll bother/need to change from my 100/10 plan I'm currently on that's $62.21 a month.
The main reasons, performance figures being posted here show I'll get little if any improvement by changing...
That you can only use your own Hardware setup with making 'changes' to your current network configuration. (not plug and play)
I just recently upgraded my router from a D-Link 655 to a D-Link DIR 880L (dual band 1900AC wireless) It can be set to VLAN 10.
I cant fault the performance I currently get from my HFC connection.
ON the VF 'check if it's available' website:
If I enter my address as 2/91 XXXXXXX street (central Wellington), it says I can only get ADSL??!
If I enter my addrss as 91 xxxxxxx street, it says I can get FiberX but not ADSL or VDSL.
If I enter my address as 91B xxxxxx street it says I can get FiberX but not ADSL or VDSL.
The 2/91 address is the 'official/correct way for my address to be shown and is on my letterbox. (The WCC and NZ Post required address standard)
is it possible to use the My Vodafone app for fibreX?

Sorry, not yet. You'll need to use Customer Zone online.

That's disappointing, I was hoping to manage all my connections in one place by now.

I think it'll be a while yet before it's one Vodafone. They have different phone numbers. IPchicken says our new static IP is ihug in Auckland.
It would be nice if one day they got all accounts and everything onto one system.
Their static IP pool must be hosted in Auckland, my dynamic address is Wellington based. I don't mind that it is dynamic... yet.
They took over Telstraclear in 2012. I would have thought more would have been done in that time to combine the two.
Just to note I also found it really hard with naked cable to navigate through their tin Sally phone system to somewhere useful... it ended up putting me through to business sales who disconnected me (by mistake I presume). Very annoying. I had to try several times before finally being put through to the retention team. I am assuming it works better if you have a phone line linked to the broadband. It would be a lot easier if they had a phone number dedicated to the promotion.
Anyway I don't want to derail the thread so rant over. At least most of the installs are being done in < 3 days.... good to see.

Yep, works well.
Here is the relevant section of my config.boot

Hi Bugzptr, sorry to bother you but as you've got the same hardware I hope you can help.
The TC4400 is connected to the ERL Eth0, Eth0.10 is configured with VLAN and I've got internet access.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong, both reconfigured the existing ERL config and even tried factory reset and starting again. Seeing 100% CPU usage when doing a speedtest, causing limitation of about 150m - the VF supplied box was hitting 700+
no bridging configured.
apologies, ignore the above.
re-enabled hardware offloading for VLANs, fixed it right up.
