Whats this whole vodafone boost your bars billboard thing?

Oh, I see, it's about the femto cell thing. Why couldn't they just put up a URL to it?
Why not just put a link to the page on the main vodafone site? Im sure people could find it there!

(It's actually http://www.vodafone.co.nz/services/femtocell/ )

(I blame sbiddle!)

The campaign is quite unusual. No mention anywhere in the advertising of "Sure Signal" which is the global Vodafone brand for their femtocell, and no URL anywhere in the advertising, merely a link to search for.

I can see their reasoning though, take off your geek hat for a minute and remember all the people you regularly see type URLs into Google.

Regardless of the form they put on the billboard, a good chunk, I would say easily the majority, will feed it through Google either way so why not make it easier for the masses to remember?

It's a form of marketing., give people enough to get their interest (but be vague about what it is) and then make them work to try and figure out what it is. By the time they've figured out what it is they've already invested time and effort into it.

I saw the outdoors banners with "Vodafone boost your bars" today. Interesting that this discussion about "Vodafone boost your bars" comes up first in google.com, but the Vodafone website comes first on google.co.nz.

Search Bing.com for "Vodafone boost your bars" and this discussion comes first, with Vodafone's own website second.

It's a gamble... They have to be fairly confident their site will be the top result in a search engine for "Vodafone boost your bars" to make sure people will find the right answer.

It doesn't always work though.

Well when people googled for what the billboard said to, they would get an offer from their competitor. Thats why I am very surprised that places will entrust their advertising to getting a good page rating on google.

They are a gamble alright, these things can backlash badly.

An example is Coke Zero's marketing campaign.
