I just asked on their chat and this is the response I got from their customer service rep:

"As of 18 November, 2019, Amazon.co.uk will no longer accept orders for delivery to NZ, due to a change in NZ Goods and Services Tax (GST) legislation"

I just ran a search in Amazon UK's help section and came up with the following under International Delivery Restrictions:

"Due to Australian and New Zealand GST law, we are currently unable to ship physical items from Amazon.co.uk to New Zealand or Australian shipping addresses. Please check if Amazon.com.au or Amazon.com sells the item you would like to purchase, or choose a delivery address that is not in New Zealand or Australia to proceed with placing an order."

That's helpful of them - last time I browsed .au almost nothing shipped to NZ. And the prices were horrendously expensive.

Maybe someone should complain to the government.

You really think that they care?

I was being sarcastic.

I genuinely am just waiting for retailers to realise that many people will actually be better off with these changes than the current situation. Their is going to be faux outrage.

Sorry, I'm not following - who will be better off and why?

rogercruse: I've now ordered an item from Fishpond.co.nz. I must admit, I've never shopped with this retailer before.... let's see how well their perform.

I've also ordered another item from Dick Smith. Again, another retailer that I had ignored. Let's see how they perform.

People ordering between $400 and $1000 of stuff will now only have GST if its a retailer that bills it, and nothing if its one that decides not to comply. If your reshipper isnt NZ Post then you can send yourself up to $1000 of stuff GST free now, vs $400 before.

Here is a very good article from the Consumer magazine. It explains the new GST laws for overseas purchases in plain & simple English with examples.

GST coming to online shopping

Not really. Reshippers are required to collect the GST, and they're an easy target because all of their packages come from the same place. If a reshipper refuses to comply, the government can simply (through customs) obliterate their business in the country.

But there are plenty of places that will deduct source-country GST/VAT from overseas purchases and who would presumably have no interest in charging NZ GST.  And they'll ship straight to you for a reasonable cost.

I had to laugh recently, I wanted to buy a new part (splash guard) for a sink waste disposer.  After exchanging three emails with the supplier (no online parts list with prices of course!), I was quoted $40 inc shipping and GST.  I found what I hope is a very similar item on ebay for $4 including shipping.  Presumably it costs about 50c to make these in a factory in China, and the rest of the NZ cost is middlemen driving shiny utes taking their slice

That is NZ Posts interpritation of it, the others have a different one. There is no movement from any of the others to do anything about it and AU have not had any movement with that. Its no different to me going into walmart overseas, buying something and then going to a FedEx office and posting it to myself. Im both the exporter and the importer.

By obliterate their business do you mean stop the goods from being delivered to an innocent New Zealander who has done nothing wrong and is now out of pocket.

And if a company is doing international sales I doubt they’d care if people stop ordering from a little Island Country, so who’s this hurting at end of the day?

What is quite strange is that I have several photography apps that are on subscription, such as Adobe CC.

If you have a NZ GST number and you give it to them when you sign up, they simply zero rate it and don't charge the GST.

That's because it's considered a business to business supply and since you would just claim the input tax credit in New Zealand, it's easier administratively to let the overseas supplier not bother collecting and remitting the GST in these circumstances

Ah. Thanks.

So if I order a new laptop from overseas (just an example) for the business, would the same thing apply?

I think there are similar provisions in these changes too for B2B supplies

I don’t object to the collecting of GST on imported goods, but it is going to be frustrating when you try to buy items that are not available in New Zealand.

Are customs going to be able to collect from a buyer at our border before releasing the goods? Might be a compromise

I have a feeling this measure may have to be modified or undone in some way, like so many others. I think it may become another case of unintended consequences. If the government starts losing votes over this, they may have to reconsider.

It’s going to be hard for the government to unwind. It’s frustrating as with something like vinyl records the supplier is often the artist running a small business with limited print runs who will have no interest in selling to New Zealand if we have these barriers in place.

We seem to be effectively shutting our doors on both New Zealand consumers and small suppliers.

i really don’t mind paying the GST but the rules around this are a little weird and frustrating
