SaltyNZ: Presumably you’ll all be equally scathing about being stuck in traffic behind these guys and their tractors?

https://www.odt.co.nz/southland/protesters-drive-tractors-across-nz

Yes I'd be critical of that, but not "equally" because I don't think that it's quite the same, frustrating as slow traffic would be, NO traffic is still more of an inconvenience.. They are also communicating to some degree where/when they're going to be rather than just "surprise random main road in the capital blocked during rush hour"

If they repeatedly glued tractors to a random main road during rush hour I think people would be viewing them in the same light quite quickly...

Those who are not based in Wellington might not have seen the posters littered all over the city, but it's pretty apparent to me that the ringleaders of this group are using alarmist tactics to try to recruit and radicalise people who are naive and disaffected. This makes me wonder how far they might go with this radicalisation. Will they drive a car into a crowd of people like what we have seen overseas? Random stabbings in public places?

If something like that were to happen then it would obviously be a tragedy in itself, but it will also add another layer of social division that could lead to further violence. I am personally quite terrified of what is happening to our society, and where it might lead in the coming years.

They don't actually care about any legitimate political issue. They're just lashing out at wider society because they don't have the life skills to deal with their own personal problems.

That’s a very broad brush to paint. Do you have any actual evidence of that?

That’s up there with an earlier post: “I was thinking we should send them the bill, but then most of them are probably unemployed and broke.”

@alasta - these really are some pretty irrational claims, given I imagine you have little to no evidence. Simply because you disagree with these protestors doesn’t give you the right to judge them in such a way.

They have hit the Wellington suburbs this morning. In Kilbirnie SH1.

Saw a video on Reddit where similar action was being taken by protestors in the USA. Local Sherriff's Dept just ran into their trailer that they were using to blockade the road, then proceeded to rough up and arrest all the activists.
It's fair to say I felt some empathy. For the Sherriffs.

So much for the Protect and Serve bollocks then.

Their actions today will have been very counter productive. They will have gained zero sympathy and zero extra support.

Again valid message, self defeating method.

It is frustrating.

They're obsessed with regional rail. Not sure regional commuting is even a significant part of the NZ emissions profile and worth all the fuss they're creating. Their effort could be deployed so much more productively if they could think straight.

I will vote for anyone who designates them a terror organisation and starts kicking down doors accordingly.

It makes about as much sense as whatever they think they're achieving.

I don't know about that. Look at FlightRadar, there are a lot of planes in the air. France has already banned internal air trips where a train taking 2.5 hours already exists - but the original proposal was 6 hours. If we had a high speed train between Auckland and Wellington dozens of daily flights could be canned.

Even a reliable slow train with sleepers could take a decent chunk of traffic. Catch the bus to the middle of the city in the evening - instead of drive to the airport - get on the train, have some dinner, go to sleep, wake up in the centre of the other city ready for the day's business trip.

Even more importantly than regional passenger rail would be improvements to regional freight rail. Get more trucks off the highways and the roads will be less congested, last longer, and emissions would be reduced.

Hmmm...having been in jobs (in the past) where I travelled AKL-WLG regularly, I would have to say that the appeal of catching a train at night to arrive next morning is almost zero.
Getting to the airport and getting on a plane quicker are far more appealing than spending hours on a train at night and losing two nights of my own time on a one day business trip.

It appeals from a holiday perspective, but the cost of a train to WLG is not even closely comparable to flying, so I haven't done that for leisure, either.
