Typing in all uppercase, is universally regarded as shouting, when writing in a forum or an email etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netiquette

It is not cheap, it is average.

Slingshot does 250 GB for 35 $ a month.

I don't think you understood the very simple message I wrote above.

I don't dispute that there are cheapER options than NZnet.

I am still saying they are cheap.

Clear now?

Cheers - N

No, my answer was clear. You are wrong. They are not cheap, they are average, i said.
Their prices will be around the median, 50% of the ISP's are more expensive, 50% are cheaper.
Hence your statement that they are cheap is wrong.

I'm gonna let someone else take this. I suspect not even hard facts could dissuade you at this point.

Cheers -N

Thanks -N. Hard facts convince me. Assumptions do not.

Based on a bit of quick research of the highest advertised (other than 'unlimited' which are shaped and uncountable) Naked DSL plans on residential ISPs websites, it looks like NZ Net is 4th cheapest.

Cheaper than it are HostingDirect, MegaTel and WorldNet.

I think an interesting trend can be noted that none of the people who seem to be affected by NZ Net's issues (based on this topic) are people who work in the IT industry. All four of these "budget ISPs" are companies that I suspect most of us who deal with ISPs on a daily basis wouldn't choose to be a customer of.

To those who are convinced that NZNET is not a cheapie ISP, I ask you:

Why did you sign up with them in the first place?

Was it the great customer service? The beautifully designed website? The long, flowing recommendations of others here on GZ?

I'll bet it was because they offered more data than the other ISPs for about the same price. Which, I hate to break it to you, means they're cheap.

Just because you're still paying a lot of money doesn't mean they're not cheap. When $120 gets your 30GB at one ISP and 200GB at another ISP, it means the 200GB ISP is CHEAP.

Put it another way, if for my $3.50 or whatever it is, I got 12L of milk instead of the usual 2L, that would mean I'm buying cheap milk. The argument I've read here seems to be "But I'm still paying $3.50 so it's NOT cheap"

Basic maths would disagree.

You forget Slingshot, and also Telecom, who I switched to yesterday,  is about the same price I pay with NZNet (10$ a month more expensive).

It is sad to realize that one has to be part of the IT community in New Zealand to not fall in the trap of a bad ISP. i think you are right that most of the people who have problems with NZNet were not aware of that kind of thing. A warning on this forum would have been good before these people signed on.

Don't know where you're getting your pricing info from but doesn't sound accurate. I could add Slingshot to that list of cheaper ISPs immediately and I'm sure there are many others.

Doesn't matter, NZNet is back online and working fully at the moment. Back to enjoying my unlimited non throttled internet ;)

I find this posting slightly arrogant, and also ignorant.

I signed up with NZNet because:

1. I was with Telstra Clear (Paradise) and their speed was abominable, so i explored why. They told me it was the exchange and they could do nothing about it. They came to my place twice after I pushed them to do so and said it was the copper wire quality along the street.
2. I asked Telecom and they told me that if Telstra said it was the exchange they could not do anything about it either.
3. My neighbour, on the same exchange had good speeds with NZNet.
4. NZNet has its office where I live (Albany) and it was easy for me to visit them and talk about it.
5. They did a great job setting me up and had my Internet working within 6 hours with excellent speed, just like my neighbour. I have not had any problems with NZNet apart from the occassional brief drop in speed or outage over a period of 10 months until this incident happened.

So the great providers you are raving about failed me and many customers and cost of Internet is not an issue for me as it all goes on the account of my business.

Can we now get the issue of going to NZNet becauase as non IT professionals we have no idea what we are doing out of the way? This discussion has turned into a Professional versus non professional thread, where the non professionals are seen as moaners who just wanted a cheap deal and now rightly so get punished for that. i hope that I made clear that reality is different. NZNet prices are average, as I have said a number of times, and for most of us here not the reason to go with them.

The author of that posting called it 'Quick Research'. It is a common thing in IT world. It is things like 'Quick research' that causes you and me to encounter failures in ISP world. LOL.

First time we hear from NZNet, 9.58 am today:

Dear Client,

We have had a major outage from Tuesday evening 18th Oct until Friday 21st Oct
which resulted in many connections failing and a failure of VOIP calls
also. Many of you may have tried to call us but as our own phones are
all VOIP based we were also unable to recieve or respond to calls so
do apologise that we were not able to reply.

We have DSL working & some voip, and email is going from Thursday evening
Some clients on DSL may need to restart their modem/routers (power off for 20 seconds),
in a few cases it may be necessary to hard code our DNS servers IP (180.189.208.8 or 66.246.76.21)
into your router although this generally shouldn't be required.

Wireless is expected to be up in Albany area today and VOIP is still being worked on.
We have recieved a huge volume of email enquiries which we can't effectively
respond to on an individual basis hence this general update.

All our staff are working 100% on this situation still and we will update you
when things are sufficiently sorted out that time allows.

We sincerely apologise to all affected clients for this outage.

Regards

Stephen Andrews & Staff
