If you are on the Glenfield exchange expect cabinetization to be over 3 years away at minimum.

Feel free to post other cabinet dates if you know 'em.

And I doubt it will hurt to put pressure on Chorus.

So those nice expensive DSLAMs that Orcon and Telstra put into Glenfield will be 80% obsolete in 3 years... Do you think the North Shore City Council will let multiple ISPs install their own roadside cabinets next to those future telecom cabinets? Hmmm, predictable but Telecom entrench their monopoly yet again and the goverment is 5 years behind yet again.

The telecommunications market cannot rely on a regulation model that assumes that monopolies only supply slowly evolving products. The future telecoms market will have big corporate monopolies in bed with environmentalists and anybody else who loudly objects to the trend towards decentralised street hardware.

Time to find a new industry!

Yep, and if you are too lazy to click that link and read:

Anticipating industry needs, we have expressly designed the cabinets to allow for multiple service providers to install their equipment, and we have proposed commercial terms for them to interconnect.

We've been talking to the industry about this progression to a next-generation network for more than a year now.

So "cabinetisation" is not a dirty word. It is simply the next step in the steady march of telecommunications technology. It means Telecom is investing $1.4 billion in the building of a new optical fibre network that will bring fast broadband to every town and village with 500 lines or more, right across New Zealand.

Most of the "talking to industry" is just providing those cryptic lists of cabinetisation plans. But agreed, if they are planning for colocation in their cabinets there will be some minimal level of competition. Government is still way behind on this, but I have to admit that the industry told ComCom that LLU was higher priority for now. Still the way its implemented smells like a fish, with the first LLU exchanges also being high on the list for cabinetisation. So LLU competition is effectively muted by the timeframe for cabinetisation in the same area.

There are plenty of areas with 5km phone lines like West Harbour that should be at top of the cabinetisation list. Perhaps the cabinetisation plans should use attenuation and crosstalk to calculate the cabinetisation priority. However I have to say that existing Conklin cabinets also have upgrade plans being done separately, so its not like Telecom have a simple job to set the best priorities.

Time to find a new industry!

I think you'll find that Telstra isn't unbundling any exchanges - that would be Vodafone and Orcon...

and there was quite an extensive thread on cabinetisation here some months ago (October I think) about just that point. Here it is.
