The recent post about the QNAP NAS that was just released got me thinking. I was going to be buying the Synology Diskstation DS213+ from USA when i travel there in July this year.
But thought I might also take a look at the QNAP offering. I have tried to do some reading. I wanted to know how do the QNAP Turbo NAS TS-221 and the Synology DS213+ compare - in terms of hardware and software (QTS in QNAP and DSM in Synology).
Does anyone have experience with both of these operating systems - are they quite similar? What are the features compared? For example, my mate uses a Synology and he is able to remotely queue tasks such as downloads from his phone. Does the QNAP have this sort of ability.
From my readings, I am able to see that both operating systems are watered down versions of Linux in one way or another.
Also in terms of the hardware, I see the QNAP has more RAM whereas the Synology has a better processor (dual core vs one core). Anyone have any comments about this?
Just trying to decide which overall is the better NAS, software wise and hardware wise.
Here are some of my requirements if that helps:
- Able to stream on tablets - Android or iOS
- Able to access remotely from a computer (or a mobile device to queue tasks or check backups etc)
- Able to stream videos/photos/music to multiple devices on the network - a few computers, PS3 and TV
- Should be able to do backups
- Dual disks so can create redundancy
