Hey there,

 

I've just had FibreX 1000/100 installed and was seeing up to 950 Mbps download speeds with the Vodafone supplied Huwaei HG659 modem/router,, but was not thrilled with the Wifi performance so I purchased the NETGEAR R7000 AC1900 Nighthawk. WiFi has improved immensely, but wired connections are less than half the speed, typically around 250 Mbps. After several support chats with Netgear, changing MTU settings, ensuring QoS was disabled....they are advising I return the router, suggesting it's a hardware issue?

 

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue and if there is any other possible solution?

Yes, I did read that post, but was hoping for a better solution than having to flash the firmware and voiding the warranty and risk bricking the router. He also indicates that some people report poorer WiFi performance, and I don't want that to happen.

if you all wanted was better wifi, then buying an access point might have been a better idea and using that with the HG659b

Well there isn't anything you can do. That router (like many that you'll buy off the shelf that are many times the price of the HG659) is simply not capable of routing 1Gbps with some of the features enabled. It's not a hardware issue, it's simply poorly performing firmware and hardware.

 

If your only issue was WiFi you could have gone and purchased a standalone access point for significantly less than the cost of the R7000.

Well, when I asked the Netgear support agent if the router was capable of handling the 1000/100 Mbps connection, she said yes and I should be seeing speeds close to that and it must be a hardware issue. I do have a NETGEAR WN3000RP Extender, but it wasn't getting the job done. Any suggestions for a good dual band extender or access point as you suggested?

Or try the following on the R7000:

 

1) Make sure you are on the latest stock firmware V1.0.7.6_1.1.99

 

2) Revert to factory default settings

 

3) Setup VLAN

 

4) Under "WAN Setup" select "Open" for NAT Filtering

 

5) Do not enable WMM / Downstream QoS / Upstream QoS

 

6) Do not enable Traffic Meter

 

7) Test over Ethernet again and see if things have improved

Thanks for the suggestions. The only settings that required changing was disabling WWM and selecting Open NAT filtering. With WWM disabled the the LAN speeds did not improve and the Wifi speeds actually dropped significantly. Enabling WWM and leaving NAT filtering Open, saw Wifi speeds return to normal and an increase in LAN speed to ~450 Mbps. Still not full line speeds but better than before!

what wifi hardware does your device have?

 

most typically have 2x2 AC wifi radios. they generally connect at 887Mbps but when it comes to data transfer max out at 400Mbps

 

if you have an iphone with 2x2 AC wifi however you can get 500Mbps data rate

 

but that's about it.

question: the thread topic says LAN speed but you mention wifi speeds?

 

what device (network hardware info?) are you connecting via what connection and what file are you transferring?

Hi Joker97,

 

My main concern is LAN speeds with the NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 R7000. As I mentioned in my first post, I bought this router to improve WiFi range and speed, which it has significantly when compared to the Huwaei HG659 supplied by Vodafone for my FibreX Max 1000/100 connection. But, the LAN connected speeds have dropped significantly. Using the same laptop connected via ethernet, I was seeing ~850 to 950 Mbps with the Huwaei and only ~250 Mbps with the NETGEAR. Upload speeds are similar with both, 90 to 95 Mbps. I made setting changes as suggested by Skillie and it has improved to ~450 Mbps. As sbiddle suggests in his reply, maybe there's nothing more I can do as it's just poor firmware and hardware I'm dealing with, although the Netgear Tech indicated it shoild be capable of full line speeds and it could be a faulty router? Not sure where to go from here?

Unfortunatly this is one performance area that I am yet to see any reviewers of routers actually review, and it is not uncommon for "gigabit" routers to fall well short of actually routing a gigabit of data. Perhaps this is just another case of BS advertising? But in anycase do not believe them when they say that it should route at line speed. It will all be documented in the USA where the idea of a home having a gigabit internet connection is just absurd and why would it need to pass a whole gigabit across its NAT stack?
