Hi All,

This is only my second full post on the forums as i've been banging my head on the wall trying to solve my connectivity issues with my home network, so please excuse any obvious in what i'm writing am trying to give a full picture.

Background:

I have Vodafone HFC Max as the provider of my internet connection with a standard Vodafone supplied modem (Technicolor) and an Ultra Hub router. The modem is connected to the router by a standard ethernet cable into the WAN port. In 2 of the LAN ports I have my LG TV and a PS4. This all runs fine, speeds are great for wired connections however the wireless was rubbish and kept continually dropping out.

To solve the WiFi issue I got the Vodafone Super WiFi which as i'm sure you are aware are the TP Link Deco X20 Units. I set these up in router mode (as we wanted the parental controls) rather than AP mode, with the main unit connected into the last LAN port of the Ultra Hub. It works superbly with no issues regarding connectivity anywhere in the house and can handle all the devices we can throw at it without any discernable drop in speed.

NAS:

I've been looking at the potential of a NAS storage for a long time and last week someone gave me their old NAS box and i purchased a 2TB Seagate Ironwolf drive to put inside it, the plan was to run it as a Plex Media Server but as its a little older make of Synology its not supported by Plex and i have resorted to mapping the shared files to my wireless laptop which will run as the Plex Media Server. The NAS is currently connected to the ethernet port of the main Deco unit.

I'm coming across a number of problems network wise with this, the first being that it seems the X20s create a secondary network and only the devices connected to the WiFi can see any of the media files, this is ok for laptops and mobiles as that's the way they connect to the network anyway, however for anything plugged into the LAN ports of the Home Hub such as the TV, which also runs the Plex App nothing is visible.

I could of course swap a few ports around and plug the NAS into the LAN port of the Home Hub and that may work but as the wireless laptop holds the server files there would be a disconnect there too I imagine.

I imagine running the X20s as APs would solve this but we have children and the parental controls are great and much more user friendly than the Home Hub so are loath to losing them.

Is there a way of establishing one network within any of the settings for either the X20s or the Home Hub?

I have experimented with removing the Home Hub and just having the X20s running on their own and using an 8 port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (TENDA) plugged in to the X20 ethernet port on the main Deco, however i couldn't get the TV to stream stuff like Netflix when plugged in to it without buffering or grinding to a halt as it seemed to run at 10/100 rather than 1000Mbps and i'm not sure why?

So in a nutshell, am i barking up the wrong tree here with what i'm attempting or is it just not possible given my network??

Sorry for the long message and i'm hoping i've explained my issues clearly.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Does the TP link support VLAN10 ? if so I would plug the TPLink into the cable modem and then use port 2 to go into a switch for nas and tv etc

The TP-link do support VLAN10 so should be able to connect directly to the ONT/Modem. You really want everything to plugin to the X20's. If you can just use those to replace the vodafone router. If not get a cheap switch and plug that into the second port of the X20 master node then connect all your other stuff to the switch or one of the X20's. Nothing should connect to the router, everything should go through the X20s.
