One of my customers switched from a Vodafone 3G USB modem to the 2degrees equivalent (a Huawei HiLink) but unfortunately they can no longer connect via VPN to the office because the 2degrees USB modem assigns itself a private IP address in the same subnet as the router in the office (192.168.1.0/24). Does anyone know if it's possible to change the IP address of the USB modem? I had a quick look at the modem settings and also the config files in the directory where it installs the Windows service, but it doesn't appear to be possible.

You could try the changing the apn to 'direct' (without the quotes). This should get you a public ip, but comes with the risks that a public ip entails (no 2degrees firewall, etc).

I already did that to get the PPTP connection working but unfortunately it still assigns the same IP address.

hope this helps:

Some Huawei USB modems have a mode called "HiLink" which provides for "driverless" installation on Windows, Macintosh and Linux computers.  These modems usually have the HiLink logo marked on the outside, or have optional HiLink firmware that can be installed on the device.

The current Huawei HiLink modem firmware operates as a NAT router rather than as a traditional modem.  HiLink provides no mechanism for the IP address assigned by the cellular operator to be "passed through" to the attached device, nor does HiLink provide any sort of port-forwarding capability.

For these reasons, HiLink mode cannot be used for remote access applications (e.g. Remote Desktop, VNC, web servers, etc.) where "inbound" connections are initiated by computers on the Internet.  To use HiLink mode, your application must require only "outbound" initiated connections (e.g. web browsing, email, etc.), or you must implement a VPN connection to another device which is initiated by the router which has the HiLink mode modem installed.

Where supported, Proxicast's products disable HiLink mode when initializing the modem.  To use HiLink mode, check this knowledgebase for instructions for your specific Huawei modem and Proxicast product.

Does anyone know if you can put a 2degrees SIM card in a Vodafone USB modem? That would solve the problem (if it worked).

yes u can put a 2d sim in a vf vodem, will it work all depends if the vf vodem supports 2d frequency.  issue you might face is the vf vodem will try connect using the vf software. you might need to set up a DUN connection for it to work. call 2d and ask them for help with setting up a DUN connection if you don't know how to

Anything I suggest or say is my own thoughts and not provided by anyone else unless stated

Response from 2degrees:

Thank you for your email with the mobile number. I went through your email and had a word with the technical team about the connection set up. Regrettably if you try connecting using a dial up connection you would still be routed through the same IP address and you may still have the same issue. There is no other way to bypass the IP.
