Gidday all,

Well, with the help of your grand advice and encouragement we've decided to switch from Orcon to Snap... sweet!

At present we use an Orcon-supplied Cisco small business router, so that'll have to go.

The current setup is:-

ONT-> Cisco SB router (in bridge mode) -> Ubuntu server as firewall/DHCP server etc -> 48-port GB switch -> LAN

I'm trying to determine whether we will do OK with the standard Fritzbox, or if we should grab our own Cisco box at this point, or (just maybe) we perhaps don't even need a router box in this setup and can simply configure the Ubuntu box to talk with Snap directly.

If its relevant we are pushing through up to 100GB/month, with quite a high portion realtime video links, some VOIP.

Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks guys!

Being a business account, ild say snap will support you using another device.

In your case, it sounds like you already have a reasonably sound setup, so it would only make sense to carry that along to the next.

Ild have a chat to snap, they should be able to give you a definite answer.

Have a read of this thread. It's for a different situation but the router recommended in post #2 should be powerful and flexible enough for a small business. 100GB per month is pretty low usage.

I wonder if you can keep your Cisco, or maybe Snap will supply a router for you.

First of all, as said above see if you can use your Ubuntu firewall to directly connect to the ONT. It will need to be able to support both VLAN tagging, and PPP connections on it's WAN port. AFAIK Orcon use DHCP instead of PPP on their connections. So check that the Cisco router has a PPP client first, (surely it would?) before you consider keeping it.

Another router option is the Ubiquity edge router lite. I have one on my own Snap UFB connection. Only thing is it needs some simple CLI config to get it working on Snap UFB. But if you don't want to do that I can give you a copy of my config. You will just have to edit the username and password.
