We are currently living in Pakuranga and have landline and broadband with Orcon (main driver for that is the enless promises from Telecom to upgrade their exchange to support CallerID etc).

We are moving to Sommerville which is in the Howick exchange, Orcon have no gear there.

Does anyone know of a service provider that has kit in both exchanges to allow us to port our number? Telecom will not do this as our current exchange is too old.

Help, I really like our number!

Maybe, when I phonned Orcon they stated that did not have support at the given address, might be a cabinetisation issue.

What about using broadband from one provider, but VoIP from another? When my parents-in-law moved, even though it was only a couple of kms from the old house they couldn't keep the number - we ported their number to WorldxChange VFX to keep it...

If you could get naked broadband (or even WorldxChange XNET broadband) you could be set.

I've played with a number of them and never had a single issue. Obviously if you stick a phone right next to the unit you're going to get the usual GSM hum issue.

The issue was with echo not noise and its all sorted now

+1, that's exactly what I was going to say as well. Everyone should use VFX or 2Talk or the like in my view.

I've now got my local call number set up to use the SIP client on my mobile phone, so when I visit a mates place, with wifi, I am still connected to my local number.

Students should also get in on this because they can keep their flat number each year.

Excellent, two options.

I rang WorldXchange, quite a bit of loop jumping to achieve a desireable end with them, once again due to issues with the dodgy Telecom Exchange in Pakuranga even though we are not a Telecom customer.

The Vodafone option looks like a easier to manage less hassle option.

The benefit of the VF option is that you can just walk into a VF retailer, pick up one of their boxes and walk out. It's a very cool looking bit of kit if you ask me.

The down side, if I understand it all correctly, and I would like some others to confirm this...

....is that the phone service is wireless, meaning you can't put an ADSL service on it. You'll still need a phone line if you want ADSL.

...or you use 3G data, which you need to do your sums on first and figure out how much data you need. Now if all you're doing is reading a bit of GZ and checking mail while you're at home then it may well present great value.

So add up all the bits you need:

VF wireless phone service - $25

VF/2Deg/XT data service - $???? (no idea, you can research that).
or...
Phone Line + ADSL = $???
or...
NakedDSL (can you get that in every area yet?) = $???

I can't comment on the WXC set up cause I haven't done one of those yet...

I have just done a 2talk one though and it's blox simple...

1. register 2talk acc
2. set up your ATA with a test number
3. ring telecom and ask line to be configured to a diff pilot (so you don't loose the bb)
4. fill in web form to churn number to 2talk
5. put correct number in ata
6. wait for port to happen
7. test
8. move house, take ata with you

You can do it all while you're still at your current address and once you've done it once you never have to do it again as the ATA can go with you anywhere in the world.

Also note you need at ATA - ~$100 or $130 if you want fax support on it.

With the ATA you can plug in up to 2 phone lines, so fax and phone.

With the VF option you're up for a $99 for a 12 month contract (which is more than fair). For that you end up with a flash new cordless phone.

What I don't know is if you can plug in a fax or any of your old phones/cordlesses/etc.

Also what's your alarm system plan?

Ok... think that about covers it all, and again I welcome corrections, I'm not a complete expert in either 2talk services or VF.
