Our Ping is 14ms
Download Speed 0.47 Mbps
Upload Speed  0.85Mbps

pretty poor for a modern country I recon.

We live in Whangaparaoa is this speed usual to Orcon, what can we do and if I move providers will it be the same.

confused

From the PM with your address, you are in an area served by a Telecom cabinet. This means that (excluding issues like internal house wiring or a faulty router) you should be seeing LINE SYNC speeds of 10mbps or more.

The speeds you post are from a speedtest, and tell us nothing about the ADSL sync speed. You need to get into the Web Interface on your router and find the ADSL line stats.

If the line stats are good, then it's up to the ISP involved (I presume Orcon) to progress the issue.

If the line stats are bad then it's probably one of two things.
1) You could have a fault on the line - your ISP should be able to book a technician to come and look at this although there's a charge I think if no fault found
2) Orcon MAY be serving you off their own equipment in the exchange (as opposed to the cabinet). This sometimes results in degraded performance (from barely noticable to catastrophic). IF this is the case, Orcon CAN reprovision the service to be off the Telecom cabinet instead. Unfortunately their policy is not to offer this and there are many cases of people having to fight to get this done.

So short story is we need more info...

- ADSL line stats please
- Is it better at some times of the day than others?
- Are the speedtest tests the same if you choose an NZ or an overseas server?

Cheers - N

Sorry, you probably need to speak to your ISPs helpdesk and ask them for guidance on how to access the line stats from your router.

No-one could give any more advice without first getting those numbers. Sorry I can't help more, I don't know what ADSL router Orcon have supplied you with.

Cheers - Neil G

You need Orcon to run a line analyzer on the line this can usually indicate line or router issues.

Remember the number one troubleshooting tips:

1.) Unplug all phones/Fax's/Sky TV and test the speed.
2.) remove any filters if used also test with different filters.
3.) Don't use phone extension cables etc.... Although using modern/new extension cables are usually not an issue.

Sky is also a big killer of broadband also faulty filters.

ADSL Line
Status:Cable connected
Line mode:ADSL2+
Maximum line rate:572 kbps (downstream) / 1012 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin:6.3 dB (downstream) / 6.7 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation:48 dB (downstream) / 31.5 dB (upstream)
Output power:13.2 dBm (downstream) / 12.5 dBm (upstream)

is that what I was looking for?

Yes, those are the numbers :-)

The numbers are strange, your download rate is terrible and the attenuation is high while the upstream is good.

I'd ask specifically if you are provisioned on Orcons own exchange based equipment, and whether or not they believe moving to a Telecom wholesale connection through a cabinet may solve the issue. (Note that this is NOT the same as moving to Telecom - Orcon would still be your ISP, they would just be using a bit of Telecom's network to get to you).

Also, as mentioned above, there's a chance it's to do with interference within the house. Do you have a monitored alarm? What about a Sky box? Did you get a full splitter install when you got ADSL or have you just been given a filter you plug into the wall?

The Orcon helpdesk should be well capable of dealing with this issue...

Cheers - N

I dont mind what provider Im with as long as I get what Im paying for.
We have had 3 providers already and its always been pretty much the same.
We dont have a monitored alarm but we do have sky although it was the same before we got it.
Not sure what a full splitter is but we do have plug in filter.
Yep been to them many times and I have done all the tests while juggling fruit and balancing balls on my nose, Ha, thats when they usually blame someone else. But I shall try again.

Thanks

JC

ps just tried it again with sky disconnected and without a filter no difference.

Your noise margin suggests you are on Orcon's own ULL network. Because you are now cabinetised you need to contact Orcon and ask to move to a Telecom Wholesale connection because you're currently suffering from midpoint injection issues. This move will result in faster speeds, but Orcon will charge you more.

You aren't the only person affected by this issue, there are a large number of threads on here dicsussing this very same issue.

To get the maximum speeds from ADSL2+ you also need to get a master filter installed. Plug in filters will always limit your maximum speeds as they can't work as well as well as a master filter as they're unable to limit the interference caused by reflections on your line from multiple jackpoints.

Hi as the others have said it would seem you are suffering mid span injection issues assuming you are on a ULL connection, are you in one of the pink areas below? or somewhere else

What all this means is that Orcon should put you in a Telecom wholesale connection instead of ULL.

Call Orcon and discuss your options.

Also heed the advice on having a mater filter installed.

Hi John,

As the others have said your best bet here is to give the team a call on 0800 13 14 15 to report the issues. The guys will raise a fault with our Tier 2 team who will start the process of moving your connection across to a cabinet, which should resolve all these issues for you.

Sorry for the trouble!

Cheers,

Cam

Thanks for all your feedback Ive contacted Orcon again, didn't get the "distance from exchange" speech this time so that's good, will let you know the outcome.

one thing if I wanted to get a new cable from the box on the side of the house into a patch cabinet who do I call, Orcon, Telecom or a contractor.

Thanks again I should have done this ages ago.

John
