mm1352000: @Cody: That seems a bit cynical. I know Freeview charges are steep, however as far as I'm aware their charges don't have anything to do with transmission costs. Transmission costs are paid on top of the Freeview fees to companies like Kordia for space on the satellite/terrestrial rmux. It is possible that there would be lower transmission costs for an IP/internet service, however I fail to see how Freeview charges would be affected. Are you suggesting Freeview would have to lower their charges to prevent providers from starting their own IPTV platforms?

Wow, if thats the case then what is freeview charging money for?

At a guess their costs probably include hardware testing for certification, transmission costs for the EPG data, management/collation of the EPG, promotion... not sure what else really. It does seem expensive to me. The only information I could find is in the provider code of practice:

Freeview does not provide transmission services, which Service Providers need to contract separately. Transmission capacity on both the satellite and terrestrial networks is limited.

The Service Provider must make their own arrangements for the transmission of their service. Freeview is not a provider of transmission services and Service Providers will need to separately contract transmission services1.

Service fees are a contribution to the marketing and overhead costs of Freeview Limited to fairly apportion costs between all Service Providers. (see service fee ratecard below).

All service fees contribute directly to the operating costs of Freeview Limited - these include marketing, contact centre, labour, EPG management, and operational overheads.

Freeview itself is just a marketing company. The companies are making the content and Kordia/JDA are providing transmission.
