So lets say I was selling a range of walking sticks , and the company name was called walkingsticksnz.

If I do a search yes walkingsticks.nz is available same as walkingsticks.co.nz .

With this information i do a search on google.co.nz . The results show not one domain that is listed on the front page

with the word walkingsticks in the domain name.

My question to the "clever ones" , of the world of search engines and domain names.

Q. Is the name of the product beneficial in the name of the domain in regards to searching?

Say I was to register walkingsticks.nz what potential is there that it would be at the top of searches for "walking sticks"?

SEO is a black art and Google are loathe to share how they sift and sort...

If you want to guarantee that you appear high/first , you pay $$ to google

I don't know if the domain using certain keywords has a huge amount to do with how a site ranks these days. It may have used to, but Google is now far smarter than that to get around people gaming the system. Although much SEO is still mainly about trying to game it.

I think domain keywords are still beneficial. Other things are more important, like quality content, incoming links, and domain age plays a part.

Sounds like a terrific domain to me if you are on the selling walking sticks business. Other competitor on that niche might be using their brand name, while you might sell different brands or generic ones?

Unless you stick (no pun intended) to a single product line, the domain should really be your company. Think about future.

It can, but it isn't a silver bullet. If you do a google search on walking sticks, only only one listings on the first page has the keywords in the actual top level domain. Others will have it in the page or category part of the URL, with which anyone can add to any URL. Certainly in the old days of google it had definite advantages. Google is about information being relevant, so it doesn't really want websites ranking higher, just because they are using a particular domain that matches a keyword.

Thank you all once again for very helpful thoughts and insight. I must admit I actually like the idea of a site that just sells one type of product , like a specialty store in bricks and mortar. I believe there is a certain amount of belief by the consumer that you specialize in a market therefore you know more about it and the selection is better. However there is also the belief that specialty stores are more expensive. Oh its a difficult confusing world . Thanks again!

I think a one product type store is very limiting, and can have a short life, as products are driven by fashion. This is why many stores start out with a single product, and then grow and start selling lots of different products.

I know a couple of people that when registering their company and put what it does in the name of the company, so now they have expanded to more things it was less and less relevent and needed changing, with the expense of new invoice paper, stationary (Theyre a real old timey place that has letterheads and sends mail) business cards etc.

Your domain name has nothing to do with your company name , so you WOULD use walkingsticks as your domain name
domain name/website : walkingsticks ; company name : GNFB Acme NZ Traders Ltd

Register your new domain name , use your contact details
Make a websitesite

Sit back & wait for the endless calls from Companies specializing in Google search engine optimization .

Its a black art making a website that google will favor & list above others . There are things you add to the website
that google likes to see, that will get you higher up the search 'hit' list .

If you have a single page, generic website , dont expect it to be anywhere near the top of google search results
:-)

or pay google & it will be at the top , as an ad link.
