kiwijunglist: I was thinking of buying this for my parents. I thought they might find txting on a qwerty on screen keyboard easier than T9 txt which they have trouble with. Also I can customise the homescreen so it only has 3 icons - TXT MSG / PHONE / CONTACTS. Do you reckon this phone is ok for old people, I want to buy them something very cheap as they don't use the phone often. My other idea was to get them an E63.

How is their eye sight? The text on the 845 screen can be a bit small. Yes, some apps allow you to set larger font sizes in the display (eg. Handcent SMS for txting) and the phone has nice, big numbers....so much of that can be overcome.

I've been using the SlideIt 'swipe' style keyboard. I've found this to be the fastest, most accurate way to 'type' on the small screen keyboard. The next best was the "T9" keyboard which is one of the 3 default keyboards in the stock ROM.....you just swipe between them.

I like the 845 because it's capable of almost everything a $1000 phone can do, for a fraction of the price.

I see this is $174 at the Warehouse at the moment - pretty good price but I like the look of the new galaxy 550 on XT

tchart: Anyone have "issues" with the headphone jack?

Let me explain;

1) When I first plugged my headphones all I heard was loudish static (no music playing).
2) Playing music with the built in app sounded really really really bad - like listening to a small speaker in a tunnel. Coming from an n95 this was somewhat dissapointing especially since I would use it when flying for work.
3) I tried a few other media players from the market but same results so I gave up ever thinking of using it as a mediocre music player
4) Then I happened to try PowerAmp (Trial) the other night and suddenly it sounds great. Same for the built in app and others - so Im thinking WTF? Is it the player app, the phone or just me?
5) Now and then it does the static/tunnel thing again but I just unplug me head phones and plug them back in and its back.

So, has anyone else experienced this or is my phone defective?

A data point for you: I have used the headset once to test the FM Radio....and it worked really well.

Otherwise, I've only used a SONY bluetooth stereo headset....and the 845 sounds the same as my Galaxy S via my headset.

Phones had the $200 voucher on them too.

How do I know. I was in Nelson earlier today, saw the new store and spent $99.

Good luck with that - most of our matching has to be local and in stock. At $99 its worth a try though!

your probably right, as JB Hifi had speakers on special, but dicksmith in chch wouldn't match as JB Hifi don't have a store in Christchurch. They still gave me a bigger discount though, which was good.

I notice the keyboard is a big issue for you.

Have you had a look at graffiti on android yet? (Yes the same graffiti 'shorthand' input that was on palm).

It's in the marketplace and here: http://www.access-company.com/cgi/nflife.cgi?a=app&aname=graffiti

I have thick fingers and tt transformed my 845 (I used to use Palm's a lot). You can use a stylus or your fingernail and write fairly quickly (certainly much faster than someone on an iphone or ipad keyboard).

Good idea but the benefit would be lost going from the airport to NL and back again by cab..
