Have just discovered that I don't need to be touching the top of the decoder. Having my hands 20mm above the unit does the trick. 50mm above loses it again.
Keep practising until eventually you have the skills to make this work from the couch.
I wedged it in between the branches of a pot plant next to the TV. Signal quality jumped up to 60%. I then made sure the aerial cable coming from the wall socket was clear from any power and HDMI cables. Signal quality then got to 70%.
I think the unit or aerial cable doesn't like being near any magnetic fields. Before I either had it close to the AVR or sitting on top of the centre speaker on top of the TV. It seems happier nestled amongst the pot plant now.
