A warning when your free period ended would have be courteous but ultimately it's a let the buyer beware situation and your responsibility to cancel the account once the free period is ended if you don't want to be charged.
I got lightbox with the Spark subscription two years ago. And after I left Spark, they started to charge me, even though I have not used the service for more than a year!
I wrote to them, to which they responded "When you cancelled your subscription with Spark, it does not cancel your Lightbox subscription and we ask customers to cancel themselves to protect account security. To cancel your subscription, please enter your password then hit 'Cancel subscription' here www.lightbox.co.nz/settings/subscription"
Of course, I then told them, that account has not been used. And they responded:
"Thanks for getting back to us. Unfortunately, we ask customers to cancel themselves to protect account security. Once cancelled, i will try to refund with the latest charge(s) but I would need these information on your card:
First 6 digits of the long card number -
Last 4 digits of the long card number -
The Name on the card -"
And they refunded!
Sorry, but for anyone reading this, you shouldn't have gone 3 months without noticing something like this on your credit card statement. We go over ours religiously because we use it for online shopping frequently and you can ultimately never be too sure!

That is an interesting situation, because a lot of people who switch ISPs away from Spark may forget all about Lightbox if they dont use it. Maybe they need to mention that when someone cancels, as part of the cancel process.
