Excuse my ignorance, but isn't TPM the [Trusted Platform Module], a hardware encryption chip or system to provide secure Computer interfacing. As distinct from the CPRM we'v recently been afflicted with. I can certainly understand legislation to support that.

TPM = Technical Protection Measure.

I stumbled across this website while browsing something much different, but as many things it captured my attention....although I have to say that most of the users here have absolutely no idea what you are talking about...

this thread clearly upholds my point...the starter asked a simple question and was met with a brick wall of answers that we are so often met with among subjects we have no control over.

Geek...I for many years despised being referred to as one, I am not your stereo typical geek. I do however believe in using our knowledge to there full potential.

An average family that has mySky HDi are not concerned about recording there shows onto dvd's or 'backing them up' they use the product to what best suits them.

Why do I have almost every movie ever made, many of which have not yet come out to dvd? not nescercarily because I want to watch them, more out of principal. I made the terrible decision to move to NZ a Country without unlimited broadband, ridiculously slow speeds and in which the majority of users are paying for broadband when they are not even receiving true broadband..

So many things happen here, slower than anywhere else. many movies come out months after anywhere else in the world!

Why can't we take what we pay for on the television and use it to our advantage, not for a financial gain, realistically unless any oddball in Monaco decides they want to have every episode of lost, or shortland street, so badly they pay one of us to seed....no kiwi is ever going to gain from piracy.

My 2 babies enjoy playhouse Disney among many other things on sky and unfortunately a lot of these programs do not get to make it to dvd, and are not among the popular torrents available....

Sure Disney make it's most popular shows available one episode at a time online, however unless you reside in the USA you get redirected to a 'thank you' page.

Sure there are pesky ways around this but why should we have to? Simply because we do not live in Das Muterland that is America.

MySky HDi is the answer, the show comes on at it's scheduled time....you record it...you transfer it to your Mac/pc or direct to disc if you so wish... and WALLA your children are happy!

of course there are ways to transfer recorded data to your computers, there are a number of ways. It is in fact very simple, and free.

Pm me here and i will be happy to inform you how to do so. The same goes to anything you may need help with.

Remember there are ways around everything, if it can be made/built/even dreamt of then we can dismantle/crack/bypass it.

And why the hell shouldn't we!

We are the generation that refuses to allow organisations to gain leadership, we control how our countries run sufficiently..we will not let people stand in our way...

Do you not feel like you are personally being accused of being thieves because sky introduced copy protection?? They treat us as though we would steal from them....

Every time you pay your sky bill you are funding them to come up with more ways of stopping you from doing what YOU (the customer) wants!

Geekzone???????? I am very disappointed.

Hi all.

I am currently faced with a scenario that leaves me wanting to desperately try and backup a few shows from my HDi box. It started locking up a few weeks ago randomly and we wouldn't realise until the morning or next day etc when we switched TV etc back on to find it was frozen (took a full power cycle to resolve) and we had messages saying our series linked shows had failed to record. We (particularly the wife) weren't happy!

Sky informed us that it was something that has been rectified on the new boxes (we were early adopters of the HDi box) and they now want to replace our unit. We have a lot of shows to catch up on however and they are obviously going to disappear with the box replacement.

Has anyone cracked the box enough that they got an external HDD to work or maybe copy across the network onto my pc?

I don't have a DVD/HDD Recorder in respect of a normal PVR...never needed one and apart from this wouldn't use one.

I bid my series 1 TiVO farewell a few months back solely because it lacked a decent picture but the usuabilty was far superior to what seems to be a "fully equipped" box as far as connections go. Has anyone got anything going across the network etc?

Short of ripping out the HDD, and cloning it somehow, and then reinstalling the original HDD, and then using the cloned HD in a system that read most file systems ... etc ... oops DRM circumvention alert !!!

The problem is you are not legally allowed to permanently keep your recorded content.

Up until the introduction of the new Copyright Act amendments last year recording a TV show with a VCR or DVD recorder was illegal. Time shifting broadcast material for playback at a later date is legal - while there is no defined time period archiving this content for long term storage is still not legal.

Ahh, I wasn't 100% clear. What I meant was did Sky have a facility to off load your recorded content, and then "replenish" the new installation with the content that you had saved earlier. And that would the Sky technician performing the task, not the end (l)user.

The alternative would be to get one of those cheapie $40.00 USB A/V capture devices and use Sky's AV / S-video output, if the MySky has those outputs. I'm pretty sure the kids wont mind if the quality is AV or less. Sheesh, we made do with copies of copies of copied VCR tapes back in the pre-digital era :) A grand total of around 50 lines resolution. Urk !!

Wasn't too bad if you squinted your eyes a bit .... or was it for the other reason ... ?

This can easily be done with some channels but not others as they have Macrovision copy protection on the composite or s-video signals. You would need to remove this signal which is easy but is potentially illegal as well as you're removing a TPM that has been put in place by the broadcaster on instructions from the content owner.

I can't remember where (it may have been the manual), but I'm sure I read that the MySky is "not designed as a permanent storage device" meaning that the recordings can be lost in a number of situations. Unfortunate, but true.

I use a $150 tuner card to record off a regular sky digi box, accompanied with a Infrared blaster I can record any show I desire off sky - similar manner to a DVD recorder, but the advantage of programme based (programmes moves/extends it's caught). Yes the quality is a bit arse, but so is the signal to be honest. And then once down that path, you can always att a Freeview HD recorder for the TV1, 2, 3 recordings. Again no limitations on dvd burning (if you can convert the files) or length of storage.

I did ask this question to the technician who installed MySky HDI, it has 2 USB ports available. He did mention that a new firmware upgrade would be released that will provide the functionality.

It will be easier if Sky could allow it to be connected to PS3 and send some stuff out there for storage..

Dingbatt, you've cut to the chase. Why would Sky irritate a bunch of keen customers without reason. Though sometimes dumb things come down to PEOPLE like the recent bank $10,000,000 overdraft debacle. Policy change or people? Sky, please?
