draculahowsby: whats espn 3 that will be available from isky? is it same as normal espn or will it be espn from america with all nba games and nfl games and not mlb replays 24/7

Had a google. This is what is on ESPN 3

I think their point was that those not getting mysky/hd, are being charged extra regardless. ie, it doesn't matter if ESPN is HD or not because they are not able to view it in HD

I really think a lot of people, even those who mainly have Sky for sports, would not pay the extra for ESPN, given a choice. You either don't care about American sports, or you do and are unhappy that they broadcast so little of it

Oh yes. I fully understand that. My point was that Sky don't get the channel from ESPN for any cheaper just because some of their subscribers don't have the ability to view it in HD. They are simply recovering costs...

I really think a lot of people, even those who mainly have Sky for sports, would not pay the extra for ESPN, given a choice. You either don't care about American sports, or you do and are unhappy that they broadcast so little of it

I agree. I think Discovery HD or something like that might get a better response from subscribers...

Unfortunatley (for some of us) ESPN is the international version full of soccer Spanish, UEFA, cricket....
This week we only had ONE!!!! NBA playoff game and as a result a lot of people are buying the NBA/NFL league passes and watch the games via the internet.

But at least now we will be able to watch NBA MLB and NFL in HD yeha!!!

Yes Discovery would be "choice" in HD as well

Will those of us without HD (old grey box MySky) with the sport subscription still be able to watch ESPN at all, or do I have to have a HD unit?

Got this in part of an email reply,

"Regarding the content on this channel, ESPN is a pass through channel meaning we do not control the scheduling and/or content. Unfortunately if there is a scheduling issue SKY cannot do alot to amend it."

Nothing new, but it is quite convenient for Sky to have no responsibility for the channel, but happily increase the price of it and force it on customers by tacking it on to the most popular package

If they are going to increase prices, and especially on ESPN, I think they MUST provide better coverage of American sports. They can't just completely defer blame to ESPN.

I accept others may be happy with ESPN as is, but there are also a lot of us unhappy at getting an American sports channel with very little American sport

ESPN quotes a price per subsciber to SKY and then SKY decide if they can make money on it, they have no part to play in the channel. That is why the SKYSport channels are there.

Probably true, but I think it's a cop out. An easy option and excuse to not pursue alternative, maybe more expensive options to bring American sports coverage here.

I've had a look through ESPN2 Australia's schedule, and they have better coverage of at least NBA. I know Sky have said they are not going to get it, but I'm not sure why

I guess for a while to come I'll have to keep watching online

I watched espn for poker, not into other sports, so won't be paying $25 approx just for that.

Guessing the extra $2 is to make up for collecting the current $5 charge for it off less subscribers, not cause it's HD.

Don't know why they couldn't make it HD and leave well enough alone, now with bigger difference in start up, to adding sports price, sports is less attractive to the mildly interested sports people. Though for people already paying for sport it's $2 extra month, big amount? -5+7.

Also agree espn probably not one of the more popular channels, could've picked a channel for HD that a greater number viewers would've been able to benefit from.

ESPN was apparently picked for HD upgrade because of poor image quality on SD feeds. I don't watch Sky, but maybe that implies that the current 16:9 SD feed is actually an HD feed as it appears that ESPN has improved vastly going by clips on TV One News.

It is the HD feed, because on the pillar boxes on some adds it has "ESPN HD"

geez you guys are a fickle lot.

You b__ch and moan about not enough channels being on Sky, and ESPN HD is one of the first things you want.

And then when you get it, you complain how Sky is going up approx $2/month. This is taking in to account the decrease in Sky general, and the increase in Sky Sports tier. I don't have a problem with ESPN going to the sports tier, seems rather odd it wasn't there in the first place actually.

As for ESPN3, I don't suspect it'll be any additional coverage. It'll just be overflow of what it can't show live. e.g. if NBA playoffs clash with Sunday Night Baseball, you'll be able to watch Sunday Night Baseball live on ESPN3 instead of having to wait to watch it on delay.

As for lack of NBA playoffs, you can blame Sky for that. ESPN can't pick up the other rights, so it would be up to Sky to pick them up. The same happens with baseball too.

It's not the $2 that I care about, but the fact they are increasing the price on a service that isn't up to scratch. Not only that but forcing it upon people at this increased price when a high percentage of people don't want it

And I'm not blaming ESPN, I realise they don't have the broadcast rights for all American sports. But the version of ESPN we get is virtually useless to me, and I watch a LOT of sport. Sky need to do better than offer up this worthless channel as an excuse for American sports coverage. As it is I'd rather go without it and put the money towards NBA League Pass

nba league pass is $100 + alot more in broadband costs to watch in hd + more for playoffs
