PimpMyMagic: There's quite a list of addresses and ports used in total for TiVo server connections. Some of them are routinely blocked to stop people running ftp sites I think. My problem started after I was allocated a permanent address by my ISP.So its not smart enough to fall back to 443/80 ?
Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
GazzaGazza: Update on this...
I've been through a very thorough process with our network and router, tried both wired and wireless connections, static IP address or DHCP, set alternative DNS servers, flashed firmware upgrade on router (DD-WRT), set everything to defaults... but no go.
BUT, if I create a wifi wireless tethered connection via my Android phone into 2degrees network everything works as it should, and quickly.
For now I'm assuming that Vodafone cable has nobbled some ports. They are next on my list.

Since you have DD-WRT flashed can you install tcpdump packet capture anything from your tivo, to a pcap file, open in wireshark on your pc and see what Vodafone are filtering then you can contact them with a bit more info.
