We will get a heat pump, but the cost of $3400 has to be added to the payback period.

I do not mind the light of CFLs, but I do mind the UV which damaged your fittings and fades photos and furniture and everything else. Not to mention mercury and recycling and broken glass...

The "Electrical power equivalents for differing lamps" table is old but still shows LEDs towards double the efficiency of CFLs. Current LED chip technology from CREE is just under 100 lm/W, which translates to about 10W to 12W for a 100W equivalent. With the right power supply you can get over 90% efficiency so we are talking 13W compared to a 23W CFL.

The other thing to keep in mind when comparing lm/W rating is that it is a measure of the total light output. LEDs are directional (some more, some less) but CFL and incandescent lamps are not unless it has an in-built reflector (reflector fittings do not count, it is dull and also not optimally positioned).

Also, an LED with a higher lm/W rating and a wider angle might produce the same lux than an LED with a lower lm/W rating and a narrower angle.

Lm is total radiation output in all directions compensated for what the human eye perceives, but lux is the intensity of radiation onto a surface without taking into account the surface area that is radiated. Light radiated by a bulb into the ceiling (or absorbed by the reflector) is lost lm (an LED does not have this loss). This is why fluorescent lights are traditionally long tubes to get as much light out as possible.

We have these over the benches in our kitchen but the sparky says that only half of each set are working due to a transformer issue.

We went to LD today and they said we could consider LED lighting overhead, but I think I read elsewhere that the light is pretty directional. Do you think LED lighting could work ? It's a similar format setup but LED lamps instead and no transformer apparently.

Gu10s have no transformer so they are clearely wrong.

LEDs will be similar directional to the ones you've got. The likely issue is that you will struggle to find LEDs bright enough at a reasonable cost. The technology is there, but the fittings are often not designed to get rid of the heat from sensitive LEDs. Maybe that is why they are much more common in spot light fittings which are open. Check in-store how they compare, LD have all their products on display.

Check if the fitting has 50W bulbs (max rating for fitting), perhaps it is supplied with a lower power rating. It is also good practice to wipe it and not leave finger prints.

We installed 3 of these (when on special) and fitted 55W halogen normal screw-in E27 bulbs which are as bright as approximately 75W incandescent bulbs. I much prefer having lights hang close to the work surface rather than trying to get the light all the way from the ceiling. We also have a 3m high ceiling...

i have philips GU 10 LEDS and although a narrow spot by the time it makes the bench top and is reflected off the white walls it is fine. You get used to what ever you have after a short lot of time but i never get used to a hefty power bill. 135 dollars powerbill last month , 3 people in 200m2 of house/ garage area , LED's are def my mates :)

My power bill last month was $300 for three people, but we shower a lot, use the drier a lot, keep the house warm with a heat pump, etc. $135 is our summer bill!

Sorry I wasn't clear enough (Lack of sleep). I was providing the example link to show what they look like, so someone might be able to suggest if the light throw from replacing with a LED Equivalent WITHOUT a transformer would provide good enough light. I like a LOT of light in my kitchen and at the time what we have now, was pretty much the best option. I was asking if switching to LED would be a good idea is all.

leds are not yet mindblowing in their light output , best advice is try some on the basis they can be returned , which you are allowed to do anyhow .. i have never looked back .
go for 10w LEDs if they exist that should have you wearing sunglasses while frying the bacon ;)

Verbatim are doing a special for $40 + GST buy 1 get 1 free, for a 6.5W (50w) I am wondering what rooms I could try, bathrooms would be the obvious place, I think everywhere else I'd need more than 50w.

For any payback you'd need to know how often you have lights on in that area. Payback comes from any reduction in energy consumption, but only over the period that the lights are on.

Point being you're probably better off targeting a major consumption area, unless it's just for a test.

They are so dim! The brightest is only 480lm 10W, compared to the 1550lm 23w Philips CFLs we use.
This brochure says that the 6.5W is the equivalent of only a 25W incandecent (250lm), not 50W.
They look good though (in terms of form, not function/performance).

Pretty is good and also something i look for but get a brighter bulb if you can...

Just noticed these downlights on the Jaycar website - good performance 700lm at 10.5W total power (9W LEDs). Datasheet doesn't include compulsory insulation rating/marking. I would hope insulation could be abutted though. Price is ok compared to other commercially available quality downlights.
