What Philips LEDs have you got?

Philips Vision LED Globe E27. The heatsink becomes far too hot to touch, but the Osram does the same thing too in a completely unenclosed fitting after some minutes.

According to the Philips website they output 350 lumen, and consume 7W, so 50 l/W. That is almost as good as a CFL (about 50-60 l/W).

The Philips MASTER LEDbulb has better specs: 470 lumen, 8W, so 59 l/W. Can't find any prices for them.

A 100W incandescent bulb is about 1200 lumen, 40W 480 lumen (12 l/W).

Just watch when looking at incandescent efficiency that you are not looking at 120v lamps which have a signifigantly better figure and often a better colour temperature as well. Last I checked 240v lamps in the common domestic sizes were sitting around a published figure of 9-10 l per watt

Got some information today on some downlights that achieve 73 Lm/W efficacy at 1100,2000 and 3000 Lumen! They use CREE LEDs. The size and likely price make them more suitable for commercial applications though. Brand is DotDownlights designed/assembled in NZ.

What would be most useful to know is how "enclosed" a fitting has to be before the airflow is obstructed enough for it to overheat and suffer a shortened lifespan. Efficiency stops being useful if it fails prematurely in real-world conditions, which is too often the case for CFLs

That's a fairly dim lamp (35W halogen is 500lm), and also not particularly efficient (compared to a CFL). I wouldn't recommend buying those to replace a halogen bulb.

No, they are more for stair side lighting. There doesn't really appear to be any affordable LED bulbs yet sold in NZ for replacing normal bulbs. I asked at my local lighting chains too, and they confirmed this to me. Sure there are LEDs available that could be suitable, but they cost heaps. I don't buy the whole 'it will pay for itself' over 10 years, becauase that is what the said about CFLs when they too were very expensive. LEDs will come down in price, but now is not the time to buy them. People buying now are early adopters, and early adopters always end up paying alot more.

When you are doing landscape lighting the led ones are great. no issues with voltage drop and you can undersize the xformer compared to halogens. still not too great at dimming on the ones I have tried that claimed to be dimmable

Quite right, but I have a couple of GU10's that are a regular nightmare to replace !! Top of a stairwell, and involves a precarious balancing act with the ladder - it's a fair drop from top to bottom :-(

Just for the lonegevity of the LED's and minimising the risk, it would be worth it .. and they don't need to be that bright.

std GU10 is about 2000 hours life and the LED is over 10x the life so if an LED GU10 is 24 dollars does that mean the std GU10 is less than 2.40 each ? If not LEDs are cheaper just based on lifetime , and not to mention 10x cheaper to run daily (60w vs 6w). People seem to just be looking at the inital cost , not the total cost of ownership. If you are worried about moving, rip out the old GU10s show em in a box and replace when you move out, that way you get the full lifetime from them even if you rent.

Haha - I still have some Philips CFL's (the original long "U" shaped ones) that I bought for our house 12 years ago, and I took them with me on each subsequent house move
