Getflix for DNS

Liquid VPN, seriously never seen speeds like them.

When we all say "I use xxxx vpn, I like them and they are great value" it's not much help unless you say which vpn protocols the company use, and whether you are using it for:

Streaming geolocked content,

Privacy/Location masking for browsing at home,

Browsing on public wifi,

etc etc

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

One thing folks: talking about protocols, if using a VPN for privacy or security then never ever use PPTP. L2TP or OpenVPN are secure but not PPTP.

I use Astrill, have done for years, only had the one problem when going from Windows 7 to 8 iirc. They spent many many hours trying to resolve with me, eventually I had to reinstall windows. For the hassle they gave me a years free home plan.

I use Getflix for most things and if the proxy service doesn't work, then their L2TP service which is enabled in the router so no device configuration required. Works well for me and I haven't seen download speed issues while running the VPN.

As others have said, for streaming you don't need a VPN, you just need a DNS service such as unotelly or dns4me.

As I understand it, With a DNS service your speed should be essentially unchanged, whereas with a VPN all your traffic is being routed via oversees server.

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

A friend of mine is using Express VPN.
Pricey, but very good, with hardly any speed loss (his connection is 100/20 - not sure how much he loses, but apparently not a lot).
Generally, Express VPN gets the highest rating around the internet. Sadly, no free trial.

Hard to determine... Factors include which server you connect to, how many are on that server at the same time, any issues with that server, etc. etc.

Generally when this happens with a visitor already using a VPN it's a setup for someone else, also a new visitor, to come and suggest Service A that "a friend uses". Usually it's spammers. Since I have blocked mentions of a couple of services for this exact same reason it'd be no surprise if that's the case here.

Not too different from those first time posters asking help opening a PowerPoint, Excel, Word or Outlook file. Spammers are spammers.

Of course I could be proven wrong, but that's rarely the case.

Would it be unrealistic to expect 500mbit down (when using a VPN), if I have 1gbit down, without using VPN?

@freitasm so far nobody with less than 100 posts has given a single 'best' answer, and the only guy with less (15 posts) gave 'options' so perhaps not this time?

There doesnt seem to be a great deal of difference between the main providers, its a very competitive market so they need to offer a range of servers and decent speeds.

I was using PIA but got a deal from Humble Bundle with CyberGhost which is pretty good.

Never had any issues viewing streaming content with either of them.

AFAIK I have never been 'slowed' when browsing content local to the country server I'm using on PIA, but was highly disappointed that PIA gave up the wacky-a-mole with NFlix, though our local content has improved dramatically since then.

I can easily watch BBC and Amazon Prime UK content, had (multiple) Syfy channel trial(s) work successfully to watch Season 2 of The Magicians, and could access NZ streaming content from both USA and the U.K. when travelling so have found it an extremely good service myself.
