Actually I don’t wana Stretch my budget over 20k. So m looking for mid SUV used one but really getting hard to decide between Rav4, Sportage, CRV and Cx-5

CX-5 Is the only attractive one on that list to me.
Wins hands down for most creature comforts and also aesthetics.

What part of the country are you in?

And how old would you go for a vehicle, e.g. nothing more than 5-6 years old? What about km's, how many is too many?

Due to the popularity of the RV\SUV\Crossover vehicle getting something under $20K might prove to be bit of a struggle, and if you do, it's is likely to have higher km's.

I know you haven't mentioned it, but avoid the Holden Captiva.

And if you can find it, look for a make\model on a off-dealer lot, e.g. a Mitsubishi on a a Mazda dealer's used lot. Rarer to see it these days.

I am located at Auckland. Having a plan to have a vehicle which I gonna retain for least 5-6 years. So probably not below 2010 model. We are just couple so not worried about larger space.

Drove one at the same price point as a new Sportage, it was 2 years old, had 40k's on the clock, and didn't come close to having the same level of gadgets or safety features. Drove like a heavy pig. Can't for the life of me see why they are so popular. Friend purchased a brand new one about a year ago, higher end model I believe. Looks very plain, uninspiring interior, and still missing what have become standard features, lane departure, adaptive cruise etc.

Given we could get a brand new Sportage for the same money, service plan, warranty etc, it was a no brainier. I have yet to spot a CX5 that turns my head on the road, but that's subjective.

Outlander is great value for money at a lower price point. Lighter build quality but great warranties.

The other one is the Tuscon or possibly an older ix35 Hyundai, but still possibly over budget unless quite a few years old.

I also agree to avoid the Captiva, they don't call them the 'crap-tiva' for nothing. Shame because they offer great value for money, but under the badge they are a Daewoo.

If you know what you are looking for the auctions are often worth a look.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

So true!

Personally, I find nearly every Kia, including the Sportage, unattractive - what is it with the Kia grill? To my eyes, currently only the Optima and Stinger are decent looking vehicles.

That said, I don't love the looks of the CX5, especially when compared with the much more attractive 3 and 6; indeed, I think there are few 'SUVs' that are truly great-looking cars. There's something about the proportions that seems to ruin it for me - in particular, the grills are typically too tall relative to their width (cf Mazda 6 vs CX5)...

Looks certainly aren't everything (and we have a Leaf, so I look ugly in the eye every day!), but I get that it's a valid consideration...

I have found the nav system in the mazdas infotainment centre sucks, and would put me off buying anoher mazda, but it is the only thing apart from road noise, that put me off mazdas. Although I think the new models may have apple car play built in. The CX-5 is ok, but I understand it is essentially a heavier and higher mazda 3 , and you can buy mazda 3s a lot cheaper new than cx5s new, and the mazda 3 is actually nice to drive if you get a 2.5 litre one, such as the SP25. I found the cx-5 perhaps a little underpowered. The safety features such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure etc should available in the top of the line models. I don't know why they don't put the extra safety features in all models TBH.

I am guessing mazda is considered a more premium brand than kia, and hyundai are the more premium brand to match mazda. I used to have aofrd festiva that was a rebadged kia, and althogh it was a good low cost car, the interior was all just hard grey plastic and it was underpowered and not the greatest car for driving or safety ratings. But I understand they have improved a lot.

I like my Outlander and would certainly recommend looking into one. A quick look around Trademe showed 2015ish Outlanders for under your 20k limit. Relatively high milage but still worth a look. My 2010 model is running well after having it 5 years with no mechanical issues whatsoever.

Personally I would avoid getting a CVT, and go for a proper auto. I think many cars are now CVT. But I don't think most of mazdas are, they should still use a 6 speed auto transmission. It is personal preference, but I also like driving manuals, but not too many manual cars are sold these days.

The transmission is one of the reasons why my last two vehicles have been Mazdas. They're a conventional torque converter design, but they are able to engage the lock up clutch at lower speeds so they achieve similar fuel efficiency to a CVT without the annoyances.

You're comparing the wrong vehicles there, so for sure the 3 will seem way better value - the more accurate comparison with the CX5 is with the 6.

It's my understanding that the CX5, Sportage, RAV4, etc. are C-segment vehicles so they are based on the same platform as the Mazda3, Cerato and Corolla respectively. I have just upgraded from a Mazda3 to a CX5 and the latter has much more interior space and looks a lot bigger from the outside, but it's actually only 80mm longer and 40mm wider than the Mazda3.

This is one of the drawcards of an SUV - lots of interior space with a minimal footprint.

If you're not bothered about rear space, I could throw another one in the mix...rented a Holden Trax turbo in Australia a year ago.

It trundled my wife and two kids and our stuff all over the Gold Coast and up to the Sunshine Coast for a couple of weeks, with no effort.

Had all the usual bells and whistles (Apple Car Play and dual zone aircon etc) and a ridiculously punchy 1.4 turbo which used next to no gas, to add to the joy of driving!

I've seen 2011-1012 models on TM for around the $17-$18k mark with very low mileage...could be a good option?
