You seem to always bag Holden whenever someone suggests this make as an option. What's your angle? If Holden is under a financial cloud then so is GM.

GM are not likely to walk away from the Australasian market. For the last 30 years or so other than the Commodore (up till 2018) all Holdens have been sourced from other GM marques. For example the Equinox is sold in the North America as Chev. Whether or not the Holden name continues long term is largely irrelevant.. Personally I think GM will keep the name for this region due to the strong ties the name has with Australasia.

GM will retain their presence here and along with that the back up and support for any vehicles sold under the various GM marques including Holden.

I think your comments are unfounded scaremongering.

Could also consider the Mistibishi Outlander. It is a strong value offering. OP's $40k (+orc) budget gets the mid spec 4wd 2.4L petrol. 2wd entry spec is $34,500+orc.

Plus side is it is a touch bigger than most the rav4, sportage etc, meaning more cargo space In 5 seat mode. I think all of them (except the plug In hybrid) have 7 seats as standard.

Down side is the design is now a bit dated (2012) compared to the likes of the rav4 which just had a new generation released.

Rav4 hybrid sounds well reviewed, but OP will need to increase budget or find a used /ex demo one.

Are any features (awd, 7 seats, boot space, proformance, ecomony) especially important to OP).

It’s just a rebranded craptiva , they need to sort out reliability issues first. The ravs are nice outback’s are great . The CX5 is starting to look old and dated now .

You need to keep up to date old boy. The Equinox is a completely different vehicle to the Captiva. It's not designed or built in the same country.

I did look at them but was soo worried about reliability and the Captiva reputation I just couldn’t buy one. I hope they do well as they are a lot of car for the price

It depends on the EV. For a plug in hybrid like the mentioned Rav4 the range wouldn't be of much use on a long drive and they tend to have small engines so their grunt is going to be pretty low. If you go to the other end of the scale and went for a full EV SUV like a Model X then from a performance point of view the vehicle is unlikely to flinch from being fully loaded while also towing a camping trailer. Of course, you pay a hefty price for that.

Thank you it’s good to know , it’s hard when you test drive cars what it’s like on a hill with a full load. We recently went with the outlander great empty up the remutakas but fully loaded with the kids and bikes it’s terrible and its 2.4 . I’m not talking about going fast either just getting up to speed limit it’s really lacking power. Always wondered what an EV suv would be like for a family holiday

In Feb 2019 we bought the Kia Sportage EX Urban Petrol 2wd - Love it

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Do you mean a hefty price in range? If so what sort of effect does towing etc have on range?

In this case I was meaning price, as a Model X starts at around $160k. The towing tests I've seen for the Model X is all large trailers like big campers, horse floats and boats and they tend to reduce its range by around 50%. Obviously a small trailer/bike rack is going to have much less of an impact.

I like my Qashqui, but it's really a tall car rather than an SUV. It doesn't have much luggage space.

When I was a small kid, we used to have a new Camira. Worst car ever. I still remember having to push start it muiltple times, and bits of chrome trim falling off etc. So it isn't a brand I have looked at since. Maybe it is better now since they no longer make the cars in Oz.

The RAV4 Prime has 302hp combined, so I think it should have enough grunt for what you are needing it for.

You should see the Model X towing heavy trailers up steep hills (here is one where it's pulling a boat and trailer weighing 2250 kg). It kills the ICE cars in power, but it does give you a lot shorter range. The X is certified for up to 2260 kg towing capacity.

An update about the RAV4 Prime Plugin Hybrid: It has a 2.5 liter petrol engine (Think it's around 200hp), and two electrical motors. Front motor has 182hp and back motor has 54hp.

It will have the same towing capacity as the current RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota states: "1500kg maximum braked towing capacity".

From the Norwegian page (that for some reason have more specifications than the US page) on the RAV4 Plugin Hybrid:

• 306 DIN hp / 225kW *
• 0-100 in 6.2 seconds
• Faster than any of its rivals with conventional drives
• Class-leading CO2 emissions and fuel economy
• The plug-in has the same 2.5 liter petrol engine as the Hybrid model with a total power of 225 kW / 306 hp.
• Electric motor delivers 134 kW (182 hp) at the front and 40 kW (54 hp) at the rear
• 1500 kg of trailer weight

These are objective facts:

In the second half of last year, for consecutive months, Holden's Australian sales figures were the lowest ever in their entire 70-year history;
And in December, the Holden CEO resigns unexpectedly and without explanation, after only 16 months in the job;
And in January, Holden surprisingly announce they are exiting the car market and will stop selling their most popular brand ever, Commodore;
And where I live, the Kapiti Holden dealership have covered up their Holden signage and walked away from the brand.

The OP asked for opinions. I'm simply passing on my thoughts, as are you.

Not sure if this is on your radar would never have been on mine but its growing on me

Travelling around South Island in a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Hire car 2 people tons of camping gear

Easy to drive, runs on 91 and fuel consumption so far 1033k's 8.21l per 100k

hate the fact everything beeps till you put seatbelt on and base model so standard cruise control

I Like the Tons of space rear seats slide forward and also can be put more upright for space

Worth a look just not from behind
