networkn: Try copying and pasting an account number into the account number box. It will populate the first box with the first 2 numbers and then stop.

Yes, this is something that annoys me with ASB.

It's like some software that requires CD Keys. I have all my CD keys in a text file, so that I can copy and paste every time I re-install. Some of them allow the whole string, others I have to paste one segment at a time, which is almost as tedious as typing the string manually.

Yeap, microsoft are one who has this problem. Adobe doesn't.

freitasm: It is a big problem because in two months time someone WILL search for "ASB BANK" and will find this post and will think it's relevant to them at that time - which we know it will not.

Once this is indexed (already is just minutes after the first post then people will get it as gospel.

Seriously, you have no idea how many people "browse by Google" instead of entering a URL in the address bar. The number of emails I get from people asking to repair their products, check their Vodafone/Telecom account (I get a few credit card numbers via email every month too to settle their phone bills!) is incredible.

Help these people with less "skill" than you by putting context around a rant. It costs nothing and helps everybody.

Yes I believe it also aides in consitency- if you are searching for something then context always helps to sort out the chaff.

I think copy/pasting is prevented on purpose. I think the bank wants to know you have manually entered it in so they can say "That is the number you entered without doubt."

Not sure if I'm right, but that is the only reason I can think of.

1080p: Kiwibank's authentication system is the best IMO. A customer number & password plus a sentence completion test is miles better than remembering to keep a stupid two factor authentication card/device with you.

+ 1. I use BNZ's site and mobile apps and their card matrix thingy is a real pita. Not very smart - surely they can come up with something better.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

You still enter the number when you copy/paste.

I use the following online banking websites:

  • ASB / BankDirect (basically the same except BD doesn't have a mobile app)
  • Kiwibank
  • Westpac
  • Rabobank
  • Co-operative Bank

Kiwibank is the best by far; Copy/Paste account number is part of the reason, but also the ability to maintain a database of payees which is much easier and more comprehensive than any of the other 4 banks I deal with.

I agree with the comment that Westpac's site has a lot of functionality, but looks like it's from the year 2000.  Definitely it is the most archaic looking.

Rabobank and Co-op bank both have the Passcode Generator, and I previously used ASB Business banking which had that too.  Personally, I don't mind it, but if I'm on the road somewhere, with just my phone handy, it is a PITA.  Co-op bank have taken a compromise approach where you can view your account balances and transactions without the passcode, but not change anything.  That is a sensible idea and much better than no access at all.

Yesterday I complained to BankDirect about their lack of a mobile app.  Using their website on a phone is a very tedious exercise involving a lot of pinching, panning and stretching to read the tiny text.  The last significant update in the "News" section of their website was in 2005 when they received a similar award to the Canstar one mentioned earlier, for "Top internet banking performance".  It's a bit of a joke now...
