Sweet. Freemake video converter is good if you need to make it playable.

Thats good to hear about the LG, i've been considering one at the moment, and had decided LG for that reason.

Ropata: I purchased a new telly a couple of months ago and discovered that Sony TVs are quite restricted in what file types they play. A salesman told me it was because they are also a media company and would prefer you to buy the Bu-ray or whatever else (not sure if true).

This makes a lot of sense and doesn't surprise me at all. Because I'd brought a TV/Blu-Ray package in a boxing day sale I also purchased a Sony receiver recently - STR-DN1030. Beautiful sound, awful (and slow) GUI and none of the built-in bluetooth reviewers overseas are gushing about as this feature was not implemented in models sold in New Zealand and Australia. I'm happt that I can control everything with one remote but won't be buying Sony again.

I'll certainly bear your comments about LG in mind when I look to upgrade in a few years Smile

That is the thing about Sony. They are so crippled by their media businesses that they build consumer products that are missing key features. I think they survive - and their electronics business is barely surviving - with the Playstation income, and that the brand is still seen as strong and high quality. I stopped buying Sony years back after they stiffed me over on a media player AND a laptop. You can see why the Korean companies - IMHO - are now doing so well. I would not be considering this TV now if it was not on offer - and sadly no Samsung alternative ;)

Yep - there's pretty much no question that Sony are a fairly awful company now.

I used to be quite a fan back in the day - original walkman, couple of trinitron sets, VCR (and I'm even old enough that I possessed one of their beta models!), and one of their P910i smartphones (back when that was a $1K+ top-end model). Now I won't touch them with a bargepole.

I nearly got burned when I fell for their line that Minidisc played MP3 and came close to buying, until I found out that they were fibbing and it transcoded to ATRAC first. Plus, I couldn't digitally transfer my lecture recordings off digitally as they had removed that feature "in case I was a filthy pirate". I was pretty sour on them after this. Then came reading about the rootkit episode, the retroactive removal of linux from PS3s, and the list seeming went on forever.

Now, apart from an elderly PS2 in a cupboard somewhere and a couple of CDs, my house is Sony free. I don't like, and don't trust, them. I simply don't want to buy from a company that doesn't care about, and indeed palpably hates, its customers.
