Mcrae what is your server spec? I've currently got a Tricore Phenom II with 12GB Ram, HDDs etc running Windows Server 2012 Essentials but I'm currently only getting it to run on demand. I'm curious about running it 24/7 and assigning DHCP to it as well as DNS duties but I'm wary of the cost given the high electricity prices here in Auckland.
Server hardware is a Core2Duo E8400 3Ghz on an Intel DP35DP Mobo, 6GB. Built in 2008! Runs Win7 and a Linux virtual machine for DHCP/DNS/Samba domain controller. All that (TV Backend, TV Frontend, Virtual machine) doesn't skip a beat.
Ideally I'd like to have a separate server for the Linux box and any other VMs I'd like to run but like you say the power cost is too high. It must be costing at least $250/year?

Yeah I'm concerned about that power cost as even at a conservative 180w running power (need to get a meter to test) that would put it at around $28 per month; for something that is simply serving Sky TV streams from my DVB-S cards I think it is too much, possibly although I am interested!
Yeah it's not good. But I really do need at least one PC running 24/7, it's really the issues that come with putting it to sleep and waking it up that I'm trying to avoid. I've been thinking about getting some kind of power meter to test this and a few other things in the house.

Got my power meter. My Server pulls 102W while streaming with HDDs active and 3.4w suspended. PSU has a COP of 60% which is poor! If I got an 85% efficient unit or similar that would bring the power down a bit, maybe 70/80w.
Server is a Phenom II x720, 12GB Ram, 1.5TB HDDs, ATi 5450, 2 x TBS 6981 DVB-S/S2 cards, plus some other stuff (fans etc).
