Batwing: Many of the available boxes tend to have slower wired connections advertised than wireless. Being reliant on a wired connection makes me reluctant to get the minix

I don't know what you mean by this comment. The X8-H which I have has 100 megabit wired connection (which is plenty fast for streaming anything I have) as well as dual 2.4/5.8GHz wireless. Most of the other boxes seem comparable, albeit without dual-band WiFi. If that's not enough the X8-H plus (which I don't have) adds a gigabit wired port and wireless ac.

What exactly are you streaming that needs more than a 100 megabit connection anyway?

One comment to chuck in .. check the specs of the device carefully if you want something that can do 4K UHD ... lots of the players can decode 4K content just fine, but only output 1080p.

I was look at the Xtreamer Wonder, which looks great for specs and can decode 4K but is limited to a 1080p maximum output.

Me personally I still use my Xtreamer Ultra2 with XBMC, works great for 99.99% of the content out there ... just chokes on 4K :-)

Hi guys

Well I purchased a Minix X8-h from Expansys. Very reasonable price - $154, and I set it up on Saturday when it was raining

It worked very well. I attached an Adata 1TB drive to one of the three USB ports, with a wired USB mouse and a keyboard on the other ports to get it going, I had no problems at all with attaching these devices. I did have to get my trusty knife out and trim some plastic off the optical cable - the HDMI and the optical are next to each other and the HDMI cable that comes with the Minix is quite thick.

To use the optical port I had to force it to "SDDIF Passthrough" in the Minix Setup, also I needed to manually correct the screen sizing. I found my storage media after a bit of hunting around, and now I have all my FLAC files in a XMBC / Kodi playlist. I still can't work out how to get the playlist into the database, but no doubt that will come. I'm using Yatse as the remote control and my key use case is met; i.e. my wife can also use Yatse to play music through the stereo receiver without turning on the TV. All the cds are now moved into a large box which we will put into a dark cupboard - really just as proof that we legally own this music. The sound is excellent. It's also a full Android box so I have the email, maps, ability to buy movies off Google etc.

If anyone can tell me how to get the playlist into the database I would be interested. It seems as though you scan the playlist from a "Content" menu but I cannot even find the menu! The Minux comes with Gotham pre-loaded and I've stuck with that.

Anyway I hope this is of interest to anyone else keen on going down the same route

And just to close this out, I found out how to scan content. It's a n interesting problem - essentially a paradigm shift. Everything else is menu driven, but to get the content menu up you need to right click on a PC (except that on Android that is equivalent to the "Back" button) or press "C" on the keyboard (documented in the Kodi help or press the 3 lines button on the Yatse remote (documented in Yatse). In the end I used the Yatse remote and it worked perfectly. The media source field does need to be highlighted. So all my FLAC files are scanned! A great outcome
