Talkiet: My advice...

Not yet.

Not if you can avoid it... Just a few more months might help understanding the market for HDMI2.0 and seeing where that appears.

There is a horrible HDMI 1.4a hack at the moment that does 60FHz but uses a terrible colour encoding system (nearly unusable as a computer monitor), or only 30Hz for good modes.

If you don't need a TV now, I'd wait 6 more months.

Cheers - N

Any updates on 4K TVs?  Just curious, my plasma will be fine for another two to three years.

Not sure about an update generally, but let's just say that financial constraints are not stopping me buying a 4K TV, and I LOVE buying stuff in general... I'm also usually an early adopter of stuff.

And while I have been tempted on occasion to buy a 4K tv while walking through Harvey Norman - cooler heads have so far prevailed because right now, apart from playing demo videos better than my current TV, there would be no advantage.

I'm waiting for the content - then I will get one.

Cheers - N

Not entirely true. The latest Sony 4k TVs (I have the 65X930C) have insane up-scaling to 4k. Even well mastered blu-ray discs look a little crisper and brighter. In terms of future proof the latest sets are all HDMI 2.0 HDCP 2.2 so no problem there.

Fair point... I haven't really considered upscaling as a benefit but I guess that yes, in some cases it will deliver a better pic... Worth considering.

See NL are having a sale and the Samsung 55" curved UHD is down nearly $800 to $2699, I think this looks a sweet deal but has anyone got anything to say about the merits (or not) of the curved screens or this TV in particular?

The general consensus is that curved screens are bad for home theatre. They have less viewing angle bc of the curve. 55 is pretty small for a curve so you'd need to be sitting very close and directly in front to get any advantage.

I'm thinking of picking up that Sony 49" 4k Android TV set because it's on a good discount at the moment ($1870)

Anyone have any experience?

I bought a 65" Samsung Curved UHD at the last boxing day sales ($2995 at HN) and I do not regret it. Where MY TV is positioned (wall bracket)  there are a set of windows on the opposite side (directly behind the viewer) and with my old flat screen the reflections made it unwatchable during daylight hours. The Curve got rid of 95% of the reflection issue and I am very happy with it. On the UHD, yes there is virtually no content (apart from all the cool demo stuff you inevitably download so you can ohhahh with guests at it) HD up scales automatically and looks simply awesome. I normally use a media center PC for everything and this needed a few upgrades (4 core CPU + video card) to be 4k capable, but it was not that much to be able to smoothly play all the demo's. The APPS on the TV seem to work fine, I just prefer the PC for easy access to my NAS and browsers for easy streaming.

I very nearly purchased a Sony 65" 8500C TV from JB yesterday. They had cost + GST on these and it was down to $4100 - a great deal for this years model.

What stopped me - HDR, this model it didn't have it. And from what I have read there are several versions of HDR depending on who deliveries the content (Netflix 4K, Blu-ray etc etc).

I've decided to wait until Christmas when we should see the first few 4K Blu-rays out. Then I can be sure paying that extra for HDR is worth it and the new TV can play them HDR properly.

Someone I know has bought a Sony 75 Inch Android TV for 4400 from NL.

They immensely like the Android part of it, although I am not sure if all the apps discussed here like TVNZ, Netflix are readily available now.

My Sony Android TV 4K experience so far...

The fancy remote is pretty bad, it's laggy so exaggerates the lag in Android TV

The regular remote is sweet

The UI needs some work, is slow and you can't customise it.

Too many menus.

TV doesn't auto turn off when there is no input

Miracast doesn't work on any of my Windows tablets (not sure whose fault that is - works fine from Android phone)

Picture quality isn't as great as my hugely power inefficient  plasma TV.

Resolution is wasted in apps as games etc run in what looks like 720P from Play store.

The digital tuner isn't really integrated into the UI, it's almost like Android TV is it's own input.

4K60 doesn't work for PC over HDMI - well, it kind of does...with reduced colour only with the nVidia GPU - Intel Iris is limited to 4K30 (even though it can do 4K60 on other sets) - I didn't realise this when purchasing because I plan to use this with my PC and laptop that can both output 4K60...

The last one is a deal breaker for me, I'm really not happy about the fact 4K60.

Not sure if it has Freeview Plus...

UPDATE:  Freeview plus is pending for all Sony 2015 Smart TVs

Also what is kinda cool is that you can install the Sky Go app on the Android TV (through the play store!)
Works...but isn't running well as it doesn't run full speed...kinda runs in slow mo then catches up...then slow mo.
